michelle o'brien came out of a rigging fire alive, but now has to fight for her life and a normal future. She is 6 months old and she has burnt skin all over her body, damaged facial bones (as a result of very high temperature). She does not have half of her face. She is in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, and one of the best specialists is looking after her.
However she still has to go through many surgeries and then long rehab. Unfortunately her parents do not have any more money because they came from a poor family in nebraska usa. Therefore we are asking for your help. For each forwarded email her parents will get 3 cents. Why would someone from the USA, a country reknowned for having the best damn hospitals in the world fly to the UK for treatment? And what the hell would a 6 month old be doing on an oil/gas rig? Or was she perheps on a sail boat? F*****g mugus dense and dispicable.

I got that email as well.
I was curious about the" rigging fire "so googled it.
It seems the origins of the story were about a wee Polish girl caught in a house fire.
The rigging is thought to be a misinterpretation of raging.
According to snopes there was an email doing the rounds that suggested her parents good 3 cents for every email sent ( untrue )

Not had much back from my reply to the email yet but have a feeling they're rather busy

The USA may have the best hospitals, but I've heard that the USA also has a very expensive health system. That said, I don't see how a Nebraskan family could ever be eligible for the UK National Health Service.

Actually, the NHS here would treat anyone and their grandmother, and not give a rat's ass. Just something they do really.

EDIT: Pinkbunny below is quite right. As most of you know here in the UK, the NHS is free, but the waiting times are quite astronomical, and woe betide you if you want your problem eradicated before the next millenium and don't fancy paying BUPA a nice sum.

Getting off topic, but since medical stuff seems to come up often in scams I might as well explain how it works in the US.

Generally people have private insurance through their employers and you can also put spouse/kids on that. Basically if anybody in the family works over 20 hours a week they'll have some kind of insurance. If you don't (say, you're self employed), you can get it as an individual (mine costs about $250/month). If you can't afford that basic medical care is free but you'll probably have to go to a hospital emergency room and wait hours and hours. It would definitely cover dealing with the initial burns but not followup cosmetic surgery.

Note that there are laws in place where if you are laid off you can continue to pay for insurance for 18 months through the company at their cost - still not cheap but at least you get the group rate.

Not an ideal system but definitely workable and from what European co-workers have said over the years the standard of care here is much higher. Tests or procedures that might have multi month waiting lists in Europe - here you get upset if you have to wait a day.

Check the headers and I think you will find they are coming from 41.204.224.10 >>> Nigeria

I take it you guys are getting replies from the Yahoo address and not the doctor.com ????

My 'Reverend' has also received replies from both from the 'Hospital' and 'mum: aka Lisa'. I'm closely following the postings and info and was curious about the UK address - have noted the comments on that. I was likewise going to suggest a preference for a bank transfer rather that playing the WU game. Why on earth would a source in the UK logically pay a UK receiver via WU (playing the game)?

Need the guidance on this one so I'll follow the leaders and keep close tags on this link.

My knowledge of WU is limited to knowing what WU stands for.
I suspect that the way it works is someone turns up at WU office and says I'm I.J., here's my ID, here's the number, can I have my money.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Point is, the address he's given althought a real address probably has no conection to him. I'm tempted to take a drive past as the address is only about 20 miles from me, but I suspect there is no IJ at that address and the people there are probably totally innocent.
