I admit to being relatively new here at 419eater, but Skype is a subject that is near and dear to my heart.

It is a pestiferous dangerous program, because it has no safeguards to prevent whoever you are talking to from gaining access to your computer. I've banned it from my home network, and actively encourage people to find some other method of VOIP communication.

Geeky explanations available for the asking.

Actually, in many ways it is more secure than other IM programs, it has encryption on all messages and no viruses have been written exploiting any holes in it.

I shall respectfully disagree about Skype being "safe". It may be less prone to eavesdropping / exploits from the perspective of instant communication - but the security hole that it opens in one's network is NOT a safe thing.

Skype establishes a peer-to-peer connection in order to work. But it has no safeguards to prevent an unscrupulous user from using that connection to install trojans / keyloggers, copy or even steal files, etc. And having gained access to one computer, one's entire network is vulnerable.

The link cited by remu has been written from the perspective of someone trying to eavesdrop on Skype communication. It does not address what happens when, having established a connection, one user attempts to access the other's computer. I read the same author's column about how to block Skype, and am not impressed. If you block your users from ports 80 and 443 (which Skype can use), you block *all* web access as well. That's not going to fly in 99% of network environments.

I stand by my statement that it is a security risk.

The risk of trojans running through it is the same as any other IM program... you have to accept any file sent to you, and in most cases you have to actively run it. After some research I cannot find a current (unresolved) security bulletin that claims Skype will execute arbitrary code sent to it, so I thusfar see absolutely no reason not to use it. Basically, I've found more reasons not to use Windows than not to use Skype.

Also, the conclusion of the blocking skype article is not to block 80 and 443, he rather states says that that doesn't work (Skype will then try other ports). He suggests either using software to block the install of Skype or to block it at Network layer.

You need to add someone who is already in the chat to your contact list... you can use 'crispyfreetolay' (me) and I'll invite you in the chat room
