Maybe so, but constantly underestimating the opposition is setting oneself up. Chipmunk has not found them to be brick-stupid. Im sorry I should have been more informative. BTW I have been lurking on this site for a while. Just registered today. I think some of the baits on here are great and personally have been following the TWAT bait since the beginning. Its my favorite so far.

Anyway back to my original question. While reading the main bait forum I see reference to someone pulling up a scammers IP really fast and getting a general location for them. Im pretty sure they get that from email but wouldnt know how to do it if I wanted to. I was wondering if someone could get my IP address from any forum not just this one. For instance i post on Rivals.com often.

I understand the hestiancy of giving me any anwsers until I explained further. I hope this was enough.

Here's how to trace a poster on the site. Get a thin piece of paper and put it over your screen. You can see through the paper well enough to see what's behind it. Then just take your pencil and trace it.

Once you practice tracing posts, it gets easy, and you can trace posts very quickly.

Then you can put it in a file and label who it was and what was important - and there you have it - - any time you want to see that poster - just pull it out of your file and take a look.

To answer your question- Practically everywhere you go on the internet will log your IP; the .com for your favorite bookstore, the guestbook you sign, any forum, and everytime you log into your email account.

But not everyone will have access to the IP, usually, but some sites will post IP's for public consumption if, for instance, they were spammed or trolled by a particular one.

It really isn't anything to worry about, for the most part. Don't visit sites from work that your employers would get upset about and don't visit sites or forums that would embarrass you if your family or friends found out.

Quite simple.
In a DOS window (provided you can backdate to DOS 3.3 with the <brk bckdn MSOP3.3..do/s/h> command
Then enter :
<sqrl bckchq>
<mom..poster> Where mom is the users name
<ask /s/ h IP + open>
<dspl usr /mom IP disp> mom is the users name again
<chk dnld ++OOCE++>
then enter twice.

Don't forget that you then have to return back to your version of DOS that your PC has before exiting to Windows.

Yes, it was probably from an email header. Very few people know what an IP is, or what good it is, or how to get it from an email. And probably even fewer scammers know what it is.

Baiters use them to find out generally where their mugus are, because sometimes they tell lies about stuff like that.

Some baiters worry that scammers will use IPs to track them down and kill them. Shocked

Many email providers strip out IPs from email headers (gmail, fastmail, hushmail, etc.)

I don't worry about that because my IP reveals that I am somewhere in an area with a population of about 20 million people. And I really don't believe anyone is going to get on a plane and kill me because I can't seem to complete a wire transfer. (If I had authored the TWAT bait, I might feel differently.)
