About a month ago I began looking for a used car for my wife. The easiest and most well known source for second-hand-everything in my country (from houses and cars to hair cumbs) is a magazine that also has a web site. So I went in and started looking for an affordable vehicle.

To my surprise, I came across a number of too-good-to-be-true offers: dazzling BMWs with very few miles on them under 6.000 euro, a beautiful Porsche going for about 4.000 euro, etc.

I e-mailed a couple of these and the responses were pretty simmilar: I bought the car while living in southern Spain and am now back in England... If you send the shipping company half the money via Western Union (they also use MoneyGram) they'll ship the car to you and you pay the balance then....

I wrote to the magazine about such scam attempts and got no response. To their credit, they have posted several messages throughout their site warning people about the presence of these type of adds.

In any case, I tried to find out more about the scams and one thing lead to another and am know writing to you.

I definitely would like to bait these suckers.

From what I have been able to gather, most cars are "located" in England, Eastern Europe and even Africa.

I would appreciate any tips and ideas as to how to approach these guys.

Have any of you taken a shot at these type of clowns?

Cheers!

Sure, sure, do so!
Welcome here; that's what this forum is dealing with!
Have a close look at all the stickies here and go for a mentor.
Make up a baiting address, use gmail or fastmail and bait them to hell.

Edit:
I offered a Deldaire machine some time ago at craigslist, a machine that doesn't exist, and some of them scammers offered whole lots of money for this non-existing-machine.

Thanks for your response. Any links to these type of scams you can point me to? I see all the lottery and Nigerian stuff, but no examples such as the ones I have found.

A bit more info on the scam:

1. You find an add (pictures and everything) offering a nice premium used car with low miles and an even lower price;

2. You e-mail the "owner" and ask him if you can see the car;

3. He responds that the car is in his home country now (he says he moved there because of a new job, divorce, etc.), and that he can have it shipped to your door right away.

4. Subsequent e-mails from the scamer instruct you to pay a fraction of he price to some fuzzy transport company (although I have seen a few that do seem real) via Western Union and that you e-mail the payment details back;

5. Once the car shows up and you check everythings fine with it and the cars docs, you send the balance. I assume the car never shows, of course.

Have you come across this type of scennario?

First: In most cases you are not dealing with nigerian mugus but with romanian vlads like this little stinker.
Image
The vlads are somewhat smarter than the mugus and more leery. Although this one was extremely stupid (Well, I have to continue the story Wink ).

Have fun!
