I never thought I'd be having so many computer security issues. and with all the stuff on the market, it's very confusing to someone who has never had to deal with it. I've been following the conversations on firewalls and other computer related topics.
It's all too much for my non techie brain. I saw a few spyware adds and just found out there are programs that can read your key strokes. Luckily I'm flat busted and all my cc's are maxed or I would really be worried |

That's a point I won't argue.
If you understand the word "delete," then do it. |

It's a WinRar file, a type of zipped/compressed file. From title, you probably ought to trash it. I have 1 machine named stupid, just for opening/running stupid junk named files like that, and other things that might not be 'safe'.
Of course I also have children that are getting more careful about what they do on computers; as they, for some odd reason, seem to dislike reformatting and reinstalling everything every couple of days. |

The virus alert email attachments are viruses inside the rar file. I just read a report that these types of spam with bug fixes are on the increase this year. Also the type that read "warning, a virus has been detected on your computer. Install the attached fix to remove it." and statements like that. |

AVG is free and even I managed to install it on my mothers machine.
It updates itself once installed.
Think its at www.grisoft.com
It's worked well for us and we have teenagers hopping about from site to site.
It has caught a few Trojans in its time. ]
The only problem we had was a virus that attached itself to the virus catcher and was in the Windows bootup menu.
In the end we took off AVG and installed Avast ( another free programme ) and it found it line by line.
Got AVG back on main machine as it works so well |

AVG is no longer free, they finished their free to home users programme in Jan this year. I'd been using it for years but got sent a notice in November 06 so you might be running it but there are no more virus or software updates.
I'm running Avast now, seems to do the job just as good. That and ZoneAlarm firewall and the ADSL modem has another firewall on.
If you are looking for free and good legal software for almost anything try www.snapfiles.com. Loads of free and shareware stuff and all quite legal.

AVG is still free.
There was some confusion about that fact earlier in the year which has since been cleared up.
However, AVG still offer free versions.
Their free anti-virus application is AVG Free |

I personally use active virus shield. It's kaspersky with a different coat on as it were (and it's free) and you don't get much better a/v software than kaspersky. I've had viruses that avg couldn't do anything with but haven't had a single problem with active virus shield. |
