I've never had a virus attack and thought my computer was protected. Every thing went hay wire last night and I'd like to know what you guys use and how can I get it. I like free so if there's a decent one I can download please advise.

AVG anti virus is probably the best free anti virus checker you can get, a lot pf people prefer it to paid for virus checkers, you can download it, here:

Meaning what? You weren't sure your AV software was working properly, or you didn't have any installed, or what?
AVG and Avast both have free versions which are more than adequate for a home computer running Window$, and in many ways are actually better than some of the higher profile expensive options [no need to mention them here].

I use AVG and also use Spybot. And, touch wood <taps head vigourously>, haven't had any problems to date.

I paid something like $30 US for AVG with firewall. I also use Spybot S&D along with Adware SE. This setup has worked great for me.

^^^Those 3 are all you need.

The only problem I have with AVG and Adaware is they take a looong time to scan your HD when you have more than 150GB of data. But other than that, they're quite good

but well worth purchasing AVG and it costs less everytime you re new.
their support is spot on when you do get trouble.
ad ware and spy bot are my choices too.

dont skimp its not worth it

I kind of like the way Kapersky alerts as attack is happening and where its coming from. AVG does not do this for me.

Ok, I checked them all out and now am thuroughly confused.
What did you mean by those three are all you need? I didn't know you needed more than one.
I'm a learn as I go user I have not had to deal with this before so I don't have a clue. (picture me standing in the middle of a vacant lot slowly spinning around saying duaaaaaaaaa while drool runs down my chin. That's about how much I know on this issue. )
So now that you all have a clearer view on my "level of intelligence" I'll try to figure this out as best as I can.

Most of the time I use Linux Very Happy

Sometimes I get lazy and go directly to Windows and there I use AVG, dont open any file, and usually I dont go to weird sites, but hey, I am a girl Smile

I use Avast on my windoz computer. It seems very complete and doesn't seem to consume resources that slow everything down. You really only need that as an anti-virus program. Don't install multiple programs assuming that what one can't find the other will. They just interfere with each other and cause more problems. I use to use AVG and switched. I like Avast better. You should scan your computer with an anti-spyware program once in a while also. And you should be running a firewall even with a dialup connection. Zonealarm is the best and free. It protects in both the incoming and outgoing directions. Do not under any circumstances rely on the POS that comes with M$. Turn it off and install Zonealarm.

But I use Linux for most of my computing needs. Very few viruses are written for linux and they are difficult to get them to cause a problem even if I found one somehow.

I have windows xp and i'm wireless dsl. I've tried the ones listed above. My whole day was spent pampering my laptop. I think I'm ok. I don't have any thing on my computer that I'd die without nor do I have anything I think would be of value to anyone else.
