Not wishing to hijack the current horsey thread on this forum (as if!), is anybody having a bet on the Grand National tomorrow? Any tips? I haven't really studied the form yet, but as it is a bit of a lottery that might not be a bad thing.

For any non-UK members unfamiliar with the race, it has been running for 160 years and is the greatest steeplechase in the world, run at Aintree, Liverpool - where the Beatles came from. Liverpool I mean, not Aintree.

Sorry, but I didn't post this thread to get into a debate on the ethics of horse racing over jumps. Perhaps I didn't make that clear in my OP.

It's a good idea to use an online betting exchange (e.g betfair.com). The odds will usually be a good 20% higher than the bookies'.** But use a site like oddschecker.com to find the longest odds - you don't want to back a horse at 33-1 at Betfair if you could have got 50-1 at Coral.

In addition LOTS of online bookies are doing special offers this weekend - e.g. back one get a free bet - for new customers. I stopped betting on the National when Red Rum retired - I won a lot of money on that horse!! Well, as much as you can get on a fiver each way!

I'm checking the runners right now.... Maybe Point Barrow (Dun Doire's brother) or Silver Birch. Jack High seems to be popular as well.

Oh feck - Point Barrow's joint favourite, so I just heard. Ah well, at least I can pick a good'un! I may well back him tho. He trains in Carlow, I've had some good times there! Wink

Any particular queen? HRH don't do Aintree, it's too far from Ascot.

I do like the word' gawk' though. When the lad starts having a go at me I will ask him what are you gawking at?
