I am designing a wrench for a project. based off an 80 year old tool (cool huh?). anyway i cant decide how i should shape the head of the wrench so that it looks the best.
Any other suggestions would be great too.
If you dont understand how it is supposed to work. there will be a bottom jaw (not shown) which will slide up and down below the flat horzontal surface that is coincident to the orgin( the blue star with arrow).
Oh and thanks for participating |

Get a lad to choose the design. After all, they are expert tools
I don't wish to drop a spanner into the works but you may be able wrench a mugu Tool Man into providing the technical drawings and a pre-production sample. |

haha if i could get a lad to make a model of the finished assembly off of my drawings i would be happier than a pig in a trough of slop. or something like that |

The purpose of a wrench is to turn nuts and bolts. Looking pretty comes in a distant second. Some nuts and bolts are in difficult positions, close to other metalwork that restricts access and freedom of movement. IMHO, it is far more important to allow the greatest degree of access and movement than that the wrench looks good.
Since A has a thinner nose I would choose that. However I would prefer a solid nose if it made it thinner still. |

^^^ I wasn't inclined to venture down the form/function debate but it remains relevant in all design disciplines.
I'd rather the OP decide on the relative merits of both or indeed other options as the exercise seems to be designed for their benefit (E.G. learning design, technical drawing, metalwork and fabrication skills). |

Thud is correct. I love working with ratcheting box end wrenches but know I cannot use them in most locations. B does look lovely but you must consider manufacturing concerns. A would be a lot easier on the budget. |

In return you can donate money to eater on my behalf so I can get my bloody orange name back. |

That depends to whom you're selling it. I.e., a woman will go for the pretty look and the color first, for the functionality second.

Thieves..... but I digress.
You will need to slightly radius the internal corner, which won't interfere with a hexagonal nut but makes the design much stronger by reducing stress at the corner.
While it's good to have a decent amount of material some distance away from the loaded face and shaped as you've shown to match the stress curve, try to avoid webs/fins, they are expensive to manufacture. And don't forget that the back of a wrench becomes a hammer in the hands of most people...
Most hand tools are manufactured by forging, and both of these shapes would need to be cast which is not as reliable (can have gas inclusions etc which weaken the product).

ok maybe i will steal so stuff from the crescen wrench and work it out that way. to be honest the stress is happening alittle below the corner. ok maybe i will take out the cool fins too. end up making it look just like the wrench im changing though. |
