That's me screwed then. After all I started the topic so that proves I have a keylogger. Even if I can't get rid of the thing.

I wouldn't go too far Shiver! He has a very large mysql database full of 419eater discussions, and YOU chose to ignore that. You better stop your smear campaign before he has to login to his database and send that data to the FBI. I sure hope he doesn't include his "hacking" tools!

You can get rid of it. Look in the list of running services. the crt-alt-del thing then 'processes' tab and look for a name that doesn't make sense. Look in the registry for a program set to start up that isn't a real program used. This should pretty easy if your mother doesn't use the computer for much. Click 'start' 'run' enter regedit and return find directory 'runonce' then next to it is the directory 'run'. The list of programs that start on boot are listed. One way is to disable each one by one to find the kl. Or take a screen shot and sent it to me.

Can you boot the laptop from a CD? There are several Linux live ISO images available with antivirus support.

@DrWho: I'll try that.

@TFI: She, or rather I have enough roblems keeping her on the windows machine without confusing everything by switching to linux. She has short term memory problems and if switched to a different OS that required a bit of learning, I'd be slashing my wrists within the week.

No, not switching to Linux... you can download a linux CD that will boot into linux (won't be affected by the virus/keylogger) then it will run an antivirus on the hard drive (and remove the virus/keylogger), then you boot back into windows and hopefully everything works again. Smile

I'd say try the ubuntu boot cd first to make sure it's not the hardware that's crashing:

with ubuntu you can run it off the CD w/o having to install anything. It just works.

If you do have a virus that just won't die, get BART:
