My mother's lap top runs on windows xp and has Kaspersky anti virus on it. When renewing her subscription the virus scanner has said she has a keylogger on it.

Problem is we've tried to run kaspersky, the lap top gets shut down.

Any advice???

Use AVG or ClamAV instead. They're free Smile

Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ or delete KAV, install Avast! and run a boot time scan. Kaspersky doesn't seem to have a boot time scan, which is a godsend when it comes to antivirus.

One thing to keep in mind, keyloggers are not viruses or spyware. They operate much the same as a normal program. According to my research last year keyloggers are very hard to find and most anti-virus programs are only slightly effective in finding them if at all. So you should try to verify if there really is a problem. Some programs give a lot of false positives They mostly can only be found because they try to send their info back out to the net. You can look in the startup directory and the startup list in the register to see if there are any oddly named programs shown. Also try to block all access to the web with zonealarm and if a logger is really operating it will warn you that an unknown program is trying to access the internet.

If the logger is shutting down the laptop, you need to look for the programs running that don't look reasonable. Disable those and try again.

Damn, bugger, blast.

Whatever scan I try to run the lap top shuts down before the scan is complete.

So far I've tried a SpyBot S & D scan, and then run the online scan suggested by Wayne.

Maybete keylogger is 'protecting itself'.

Damn, the next burke to sugges we have anything to do with keyloggers, I'll lynch the bugger.

When the computer starts, keep hitting the F8 key repeatedly, if you hit it at the right time, you will get a screen up with few options on it, on of which will be SAFE MODE, scroll down to that one and hit ENTER, your computer will then boot up in safe mode, no programs will run, so you should be able to complete a scan without anything else running, delete anything the scan comes up with.

^^^Cheers, I already have adaware installed on that my mother's machine. Trouble is, I think that she should not have moved off that extremely old amstrad word processor she bought in the late 80's.

Personally, I still think that clay tablets have an advantage.

Damn, I did manage to open safe mode!!! Yippee!!!!

The machine still shuts down when starting a scan.

EDIT: I think that this problem requires someone with a lot more nous than me. Fortunately the damn thing is still under warrenty.

Have you tried g00gling the brand name/model number and problems-also how hot is the laptop?

To be honest I haven't tried to google, because I feel that the problem is now way out of my league. As for it being hot (if I understand you correctly) it was supplied by an Local Education Authority because my mother was able to get a disability grant to do a Uni course. So we'll give the LEA a ring tomorrow and let them sort it out.

Kaspersky seems to be stopping the keylogger from communicating and she is mainly using it for essays for her MA. It's going to make boring reading to the fuckers behind the logger.

She has been banned from doing anything that requires a password though.

@Rodus - That would be PERFECT for her. My mother is a bloody nusience on a computer. The sort of mistakes she makes on machines are extremely complicated ones. Frequently, it's a damn site easier to get things right than it is to make what I call a 'mother mistake'. Her and technology just do not mix.

I lent my mother an old iMac and she poured coffee over the keyboard, erased half the system files and then the analogue board blew. Never again.
