Do your baiting characters have more friends than you?

Please help me with my research.

I used to hang out on 419eater 2 years ago, but then I went back to Africa and didn't have sufficient internet access or time to continue.

Now I'm back in the US, temporarily (I hope) unemployed again, and doing some research on a topic I think many people here can relate to.

A friend involved in undercover work said that at one point, he realized that his undercover identity had more friends than he did. If you find yourself in a similar situation, in other words, you find yourself preferring your baiting character's (or characters') life/lives to your own, or spending most of your time constructing them, post your comments here or send me a pm.

I can start. No.

My baiting characters are stupid, unimaginative and are prone to be scammed a lot. They are usually religious tools with no ability to think on their own. And they associate with scum.

Those characters only exist a few minutes during the day so I don't think I would prefer their life. I don't think there is a similarity to people who work undercover and have to assume a character over a long period of time.

Generally, no. I don't really put enough effort into developing my characters. Occasionally the one friend this character seems to have contacts the scammer to inform them of my 'unfortunate accident', and plus I seem to have developed something of a real life (patent pending) these last few months, so no I wouldn't say so.

No, my baiting characters are either total halfwits, or religious zealots with psychological problems. Not good friend material.

I'm not a pretty dumb rich widow from Northern England who constantly gets everything confused and for whom everything has to be repeated at least ten times.

I'd hate to be her. I'm quite content and happy being myself.

No. In fact, my baiting characters tend to be loners, quite unlike my real life persona.

Now, if your question was "Do you have more friends on Eater than in real life?", again the answer would be "no", but it would be much more realistic comparison.

My characters have a jetset lifestyle that is "absolutely fabulous dahling"... Cool

Sadly, they alwas seem to end up being kidnapped or murdered though, so on reflection, I wouldn't want to be one of my creations.... Wink

No, the topic isn't schizophrenia, or even multiple personality disorder, which would be more appropriate.

I guess I need to rephrase the request. What I'm really curious about are people who start investing energy in their character's identities to the point where it becomes a kind of addiction.

Maybe baits are more effective if you have boring characters, but doesn't it detract from the fun? What, no mafia-connected widows or pedaphile ring-running clergymen?

I make my characters up as I go along. I don't feel any envy of their situations or wish I was them, they're just spontaneous creations of mine to change as necessary for the bait.

I have created some pretty wild characters before, which usually become more and more wild as time goes by. However, those characters only last as long as the bait itself. Once a great bait ends I will tend to slow down and stop thinking about baiting very much during the day.

To make things clear though; I have lots of real life friends and could never get addicted to playing some imaginary character on the internet.

I personally think that if I ever met one of my characters in person - I would kill it off very quickly. They are so annoying, controlling, forgetful, demanding, illiterate, pc unsavvy and more that I couldnt last in the same room with one for long at all.

I guess, being undercover requires you to be an extrovert, where baiting can be very introverted.

I'm a very straight baiter, so my current character is quite often just "me" with relatively minor changes. She usually has a different job with a schedule that makes her difficult to contact by phone, to be sure, and lives in a different southern state than I do, and her financial situation is not as good, and sometimes, her sense of skepticism is not as healthily developed, but honestly, I figured out quite a while back that the easiest way to tell a lie is just to put a new coat of paint on the truth.

Now, obviously, my character does the outrageous and sometimes reprehensible things real me simply wouldn't do, like cursing a lad viciously or questioning his sexual orientation or anything else I can think of that will probably set the lad's teeth on edge, but the initial framework (basic demographics like age, sex, usually religion, if it comes up, region of origin, etc.) is mostly me. I just start with me and based on the lad reaction and the direction the bait takes, I build out from there. Sometimes I veer a little, sometimes I veer a lot. Do I prefer my character? Nope. I just think like "her" for a few fun, mischievous minutes a day.

Some baits run closer to real me than others. I did one where I had a lad who wanted a "insert obscure and outrageous totally made up half-arsed name for an old, rare, expensive data tape here" from me, so I kept a straight face while maintaining I ran a computer refurbishing business out of my garage, and by golly, I just happened to have ten of 'em on hand, gathering dust! Watching his scrambling to salvage a chance to make some money off of me was well worth it. I even went to great lengths to show him the house I was purchasing for his arrival, etc. I left him totally believing that such a tape existed.

Then I encouraged another baiter to contact him and tell him they found a lady who ran a computer refurb business out of her garage who just happened to have one of these tapes... Twisted Evil

My characters tend to be oxymornic in the way they are happy to hand out donations of vast amount of sums yet are simultaneously unable to do so.

They tend to be both kind and caring yet at the same time they have a dark side thta includes treatign everyone around them as objects and probably being insane I also have a pair of assasin-plumbers named mario and luigi

My characters are just puppets in a play.
They range from priests to Cartel drug lords. Businesses are created to fit the bait.
Since none of my characters are salsa dancers, I cannot identify myself with any. I have develop some characters that have their own personality and fit according to the bait.

Acutally no .. my charaters seem to be the next Jim Jones with a wild religiont hat is trying to spread everywhere and even with movie stars - while that might be nice - accidents seem to happen offen to these guys

or end up in forigen prisons

Out of seven regular characters, only three are developed to any great extent and two of them work together. I don't know how many friends they have, but as they sell pornography to major government figures, they have many contacts. The third one actually has a written history - about one page of A4. She may or may not be a member of my church. All other contacts are anonymous - I don't even know the name of her ex-husband.

Baiting characters seem to require even less detail than role-playing characters. I've got some reasonable amount of detail for some of those - but the answer to your question would still be "no."
