I'm interested to know what the membership thinks about this? You might like to read this thread before voting. The views of some serious scam-fighters are expressed in that thread, ie, people who are out to hurt the lads' operations, not just bait them for fun. |

Bad idea, with the rare exception. Phonelads have been mentioned, but I notice no one has pointed out "paid vanity addresses". For example, those MSN personal domains that a lot of lads thought were all the rage there for a while. A lot of the lads would get them just for the convincing emails, like [email protected] and never set up a website.
The fact that we started shutting them down at a cost to the lad of $45 per pop seemed to reduce their popularity all of a sudden.
A basic rule of thumb is "If it costs the lad money, shut it down." |

To play devil's advocate, the lad might not have backed up his contacts so if he loses the contacts then he loses his victims.
But the problem with that is the word MIGHT. You can never be sure. Having said that when I forget a e-mail password (quite frequently I have memory problems) I just open up a new one. It doesn't waste my time. It's not effort on my part. That undermines the only reason I could think of to close a lad's free mail account. |

One would presume that people are here to bait - so anyone closing accounts is pursuing a self-defeating course - however there are sites that follow a different ethos, and are more likely to be culpable.
I haven't lost any long/medium term baits but I have had some early stage losses from fresh scam mails that have surprisingly bounced. The most recent one was from a hotmail account I recall, and I just presumed that the isp had detected them mass mailing off the account, or associated accounts.
Unless there is a smart ass in our midst I don't think there's any need for us to cut each other up about it. |

Bad idea. Chances are, it's just a catcher box that you're closing, which they can quickly replace. It's much better to bait the box over and over than to have them open a new one.  |
