C'mon you guys, be nice. SP shelled out extra for the Windows Vista Real Ultimate Power Edition Plus Premium. It's exactly like regular Vista, but it comes with Ninjas. |

What's that you say? I think your Windows has taken over your laptop because your post says that Windows is working |

I would just like to state for the record that I received a copy of Vista Ultimate like last week, for pretty much free (came with the mobo/proc bundle that I paid a good price for- my job sucks, but has a COUPLE perks).
And it is still sitting on my shelf in it's pretty plastic wrapper. I think I was supposed to rush in and install it or something. |

^^^ only good cat is a dead one
SP the wireless should be fairly painless. To explain your troubles here .. since you are running a totally new operating system that I guess has stripped you of any interaction with the actual hardware I proberly can't help.
My parents just got a new dell with vista home edition. It seems slower than anything before it. I'm running XP and I'm happy to go back to 2000.
Prior to that DOS was the only answer. except of course you had the money for unix and a room full of developers to make it do something.
I'm very close to plunging into the linex world just to prove I still have it
Anyone seen a decent open source POS anywhere if so I'm in |

I just put the BT set up CD in the laptop, that tells me it cannot find a wireless card/connection on the laptop, and tells me to connect via an ethernet cable, and then see the help files for connecting wirelessly, well, I have a booklet that tells me how to connect wirelessly by setting up a network or wireless connection, where I enter the SSID and WEP key number, but it still can't find the network, somewhere else it told me to make sure my wireless card thing is switched ON, anyone know where to turn it on so that BT Broadband can see it?
[edit]
Problem solved , I found a wireless ON/OFF button on the front of the laptop that lights up a tiny wireless symbol the same as on the hub, clicked it to on, put the WEP number in and I now have the laptop connected wirelessly |

^^^^^ Yeah, I was pissing around for a few hours last night and today trying to get the wireless connection going on the laptop, then I noticed the on/off button on the front of the laptop today, what annoys me is that there was no booklet with this laptop telling me what is what, had I had a booklet I could have just slid the button to ON, there are symbols on the keyboard kes that I have no idea what they are, like a half moon on the F1 key etc, I will have to do a Google for those later.
@ Dionysius, I don't think anyone can jump on my wireless connection, because you have to input the WEP security key when making the connection, and if I am getting it right, nobody else can connect to my network unless they have that WEP key number that is on the back of my hub? |

That half moon thing is keyboard short cut to put your laptop into sleep mode.
As for the WEP key, that's correct (most of the time). They are hackable however.

Well, WEP isn't the most secure, but if you set your firewall to only accept the mac address of your wifi card you should be relatively secure

Thanks, but that wikipedia page is like a foreign language to me, how do I find what the MAC address of my wifi card on my laptop, any idea?
Also, I have just downloaded Norton Internet Security 2007 for a 3 month free trial, I have got the full Norton Internet Security 2007 on disc, but thought I might as well get the extra 3 months at first, it has a firewall on it, anyone know how to configure this Norton firewall to put the MAC ddress in to it?
[edit]
There is a 12 digit MAC number on the back of the hub, would that be it? Or does it have to be the MAC address inside the laptop? |
