Quote:
This is a story about love. About inscrutable complexity and remarkable simplicity, about the promise of forever. It is about obsession and devotion, and grand gestures and 4,000-word love letters.

It is about a curious group of people with an almost religious zeal for a mind-numbing string of numbers. Actually one number, made up of a chain that is known so far to be more than one trillion digits long. They are the acolytes of the church of pi.

That day falls on Wednesday this year: March 14. Or 3.14. Obviously.

Quote:
This is how Akira Haraguchi, a 60-year-old mental health counselor in Japan, puts it: "What I am aiming at is not just memorizing figures. I am thrilled by seeking a story in pi."

He said this one day last fall after accurately reciting pi to 100,000 decimal places. It took him 16 hours. He does not hold the Guinness world record, only because he has not submitted the required documentation to Guinness. But he has his story.

Image Shocked

I wonder what the result is. Wink

I don't understand our obsession with PI, I mean.. we basically only need the first 3 digits. Yet, we want to find the next digit, and the next digit.. This should go on for a few thousand years till we reach the infinity stage.

Is 4/19 celebrated as Eater day? Do the mods visit and leave baskets of goodies on our doorsteps? I hope so.

Hmm, they never claimed they calculate it to the end - the program just needs 19 cycles to get to 1 Meg digits. You can download a copy here: http://www.xtremesystems.com/pi/ ; my pc seems to be a bit slower than the system in KD's screenshot, and the program crashes (on my system) when I try to calculate over 512k digits. The result is stored in a text file.

I propose a "square root-day"... any (publishable) suggestions?

Also I'd like to see a "not having a bloody teabreak every half hour-day" to annoy the people who claim I'm skiving when I have a fag....

Uhh, *cough, cough* I meant it *cough, cough* as a joke *cough, cough*.

I found that screen shot on the net. The message "Pi calculation is done!" just struck me as rather amusing.

Who gives a shit what they meant, it's a funny line. Very Happy

sorry KD for treating you as a moron, I should have known (should I?) - it's indeed a funny line. It's not funny however that my PC crashes on the program when I go over 17 iterations. Anyone else have this problem?

Why do we need all those numbers after the dot when a simple 22/7 would give the perfect answer Smile

And I just realised for all you nongs that cant get dates right pi day would be july 22nd.
March the 14th phew 143 what heck is that Smile

It's no wonder the northern hemisphere is on the bottom of the world.

Back in the bad old days, before computers and digital calculators it was commonly taught to approximate pi as 22/7. If you're good with fractions you can probably whip out an answer quicker than using 3.14159267. Your answer won't be perfect, but it'll be close enough for most applications
