Hi all,

I recieved this in my spambox today. Any ideas? I checked the ip and it says Senegal. If this is a scam, how does it work?

I'll take it on if it is a scam - there are so many possibilities with this!!

If it's a scam, I'd say there's a conference fee you have to pay. After which then you meet some shady friends of his at California airport.

Did not mean to sound snotty but a legit organization would not be using a free email provider like Yahoo.

Also, if you were to Google a legit organization, the result would not instantly point to a URL saying that it was a scam. @tp -- good idea, always scrub the e-mail addy, even from a baiting/catcher account.

IP has been traced to Sengal ---- I sense the lads are behind this. Like Uncle Ned said, (and so does my crystal ball), I see an advanced fee payable by Western Union in the future.

This scam has made the rounds before.

You'll need to Western Union your airfare, entrance fees, visa fees etc to the lad.

Senegal is in West Africa, just below the Sahara (about five countries north of Cote d'Ivoire).

Lotta nailed the scam perfectly. I've never baited one of these, but it looks like it could be fun. Don't forget to mention that your entire church group youth corps wants to go to Dakar... but they have a few special requirements Wink

You would think that someone with an Anglo name such as 'Jennifer Gilbert' would know to say "IN California" rather than "AT". Obviously you are going to be hit up for some sort of travel fee on some level. You can easily let that slide..

Ask the mugu WHERE specifically in California this 'conference' will be held--and not just something vague like L.A. ...It's all a scam of course but presumably a 'global conference' would need some big venue which must be booked months in advance. And this can be verified. But even if there really will be said gathering of global youth--it's still a scam. And patently obvious from the 'myway' addy, among about a dozen other things.

Then tell dear 'Jennifer' that you have a home in California so you'll be okay on traveling to the conference. Tell her you'll be at 464 North Rexford Drive..[That's Beverly Hills Police HQ].

PM me if you need more helpful hints/info for the Cal. aspect of the bait.

Scam.

The sending address is different from the reply address. No legitimate org would do that. Both addresses are free and temporary.

The real source location is South Africa.

And sorry but I do not think with my ass. I use my head.

While it may seem funny to do this and get back at what they did to Eddie Murphy early in the movie Beverly Hills Cop, we don't want to waste the time of LE or any third party.

While its highly unlikely that a scammer will roll up to the front door, they may send a fake check as an overpayment of the hotel or airplane costs. This would have to be logged.

This way the scam works is that the "hosts" will tell you that you must attend both sessions of the conference to get the free airfare and accommodations. You will also get an email, that to qualify, you must stay at the approved hotel (which will be a real hotel). All of a sudden, there will be a change at the conference, where the approved hotel has been changed to another(or some such excuse), and that the special arrangement has not been completed in time. Now, you must pay up front (by WU, of course) and you will get your money back later. I had one of these request for a youth conference in the Netherlands and Spain. The email said that we had to pay �200 per person per day of the conference (double occupancy)of the portion that was held in Spain. A quick telephone check with the real manager of the hotel said that for the week in question, the cost was only �50 per person. The scammer also said that "for a special fee", we could get our visas quicker. When I wrote back that you do not need a visa if you hold a EU passport to travel within the EU, he twigged.

I am just trying to get the word out about the scammers...avoid ALL contact. If any of you folks have been to the yahoo group website called romancescams, you would see what I mean. I was scammed by a man claiming to be Raymond Bala (he was very cute!) who was working in Nigeria. He was part of an organization called the Grange Foundation-a charity (orphanage for kids). He was supposedly from the UK, Manchester and Southall. He had pics of his daughter, the orphanage, and very real photos of him dancing with these kids.
According to the US Customs (yes, I was contacted by them), this person tried to send me $70,000 in fake money orders. After I received a form letter from Customs, I spoke with a man there who explained to me that this is organized crime (much like the mafia) and people have lost their houses, gone to jail, been threatened, had their families threatened, and even been killed. They have people working here in the US so that they can follow and stalk victims. They then use the info to harass and further scare their victim and the family (they know where you live, where your kids go to school, your phone #, where you work, etc.). It is serious and dangerous business. The other thing the scammers do, is join websites and forums to see what the names of the people are who are bragging about scam baiting and how they are doing it. Your best bet is to report them to the FBI, local police, etc. Also, if you have lost money to a scam, you may be able to claim some of it on your taxes. There is contact information on the yahoo group called romancescams. The moderator for the group has actually been in close contact with the FBI who frequents her website to get new info about the scammers from the hundreds of posts (the FBI uses her site to see what the latest and greastest scam is and who is doing the scamming).
I am trying to do my part to help alleviate anyone else's doubt as to whether or not a questionable email is real..IT ISN"T! If you have to question the legitimacy, even for a moment, delete it! There are so many worthy, reputable businesses, charities, youth organizations, and religious groups who are doing the right thing. Please spend your monies with them!

Nothing of what you say is news to us. Sorry for being scammed and I hope you can help others before they are scammed as well.

As others above have pointed out, I think you may be in the wrong place. Try non-baiting sites who look for romance on the internet and talk to people you know or have dealings with.

That said, they are rare. Its seldom that a mugu will so much as take the time to google a baiter's character name, let alone join the forum and try to suss out the how and why of what we do here. 999/1000 lads have no idea what a scam baiter is, and couldn't care less (until they have the misfortune to run into one of our top trophy/safari/or badge-bearing baiters, that is).

My bad on that, you are correct. I know of course the protocol to never involve 419eater with a 3rd party..Which I will not do and have not done. I only mention the site when I have a HOS/Trophy photo posted by Shiver, so I can get the mugu to eventually view it and give me the curses of thunder and Ogbumiri. [Whoever that is.] So my real bad is not having told the poster Templeton that and advising any true newbie.

I have however brought American LE into the scene 2 times so far in my baits..When 2 mugu 'bag-men' have given me traceable land lines and home addresses here in the USA I have notified the cops in those jurisdictions . And will continue to do so whenever the golden op arises.

BTW--ever notice that many people on both sides of the dollar-chop seem to think that The FBI is the US Federal agency that handles 419 scams? Including the newbie a few postings above? How wrong they be!!!
