Is there a cheap and easy way to create distilled water, other than using a condenser?

I need a couple of litres only, so I don't want to involve any great expense or worse, work! Would I be better just buying it?

depends what you need the water for, shiver.
In laboratory we used one of these:

For fish tanks you use reverse osmosis:

edit: sorry, overread that you only need a few liters....so I agree with the others, you can buy it at stores....maybe ask at stores where they sell fish tanks and stuff....they should have it too...

actually any petrol station should have it bottled - to refil your cars battery

You should be able to buy it at the grocery store, too. They sell it for use in certain types of humidifiers and irons.

It's very cheap.

Ok, so if you drink nothing but distilled water, you might lack some minerals and get all acidic. If only a organism could try to regulate it's own Ph levels. :/

I get mine from the local chemist, they sell it in 1 litre bottles.

Just tell 'em it's for topping up acid batteries.

not only this....because of the different osmotic pressure of distilled water it diffuses into the cell and can make the cell burst, which is not good, as you can guess Wink

Yes, that would be true if you dropped unprotected cells into pure distilled water or injected it directly into your body in significant quantity. However, first the water would go through your digestive system, which deals with such pleasant liquids as hydrochloric acid, and are lined with protective layers of mucus. After that, it would be aborbed and mixed into your bloodstream, where it would <strike>burst into flame</strike> well... act like water I suppose.

I find it really hard to believe drinking less than a gallon or so would do anything other than encourage kidneys to lose a shade more minerals than you're taking in.

Intaking many things in large enough quantities is almost always a bad idea. I remember a news story about a woman who literally killed herself by drinking (bottled?) water until she got water intoxication and later died.

Can you drink it? Yes. I use distilled water to brew my coffee because I am a coffee snob and think I can tell a difference (but it just keeps the pot from getting clogged with minerals and scale).

Does it taste good? Distilled water tastes bland - no taste at all - good or bad - it just tastes wet.

Will it kill you? Yes, by drowning.

water for topping car batteries is available in most peoples homes.
if you are the unlucky one who doesnt have a frost free freezer,take a look inside there.bet you have loads of it all clinging to the inside of the freezer.

thats distilled water in the frozen form

chip away(be carefull when chipping away!!!!)
