I am new. I have been reading the stickies, but have been unable to find an answer.

My question is: does anyone ever gone after love scammers who are out to get nude pictures from someone?

I have a friend who thought that the personal she met online was genuine. Anyway, she thought it was ok with the webcam to do a little R rated stuff (she didn't know that he could make pictures from it). He has let her know that he has added it to his collection. He has not tried to blackmail her or anything. It's just the thought that he has these pictures and can do anything he wants with them.

He has a collection of images that were willingly given to him. If he hasn't done any blackmailing, then he has not done anything wrong. Don't bait him.

probably not a "love scammer" - just a pervert ....

If I were your friend I'd go to the police (looking sheepishly embarassed) - who knows where the images will turn up?

He may, or may not, have committed an offence (what's your friend's age?), but (depending on what part of the world you live in I suppose) the police might take this seriously, and if he hasn't done anything illegal, there's no harm in warning him off should he ever think of using/distributing these images.

As far as I'm aware your friend can ask him to delete these images (only celebrities lose their right to privacy - in certain circumstances I hasten to add!), but it's doubtful he'll do so without police enforcement.

Sorry jojobean : she wasn't aware that he could make pictures from it.
Maybe naive, but still... He should've mentioned he would store the images.
It's not just about blackmailing : he could share those images with other people... not something I imagine she'd appreciate?

The police won't enforce any such thing and they have no need to.

I don't understand what the guy did wrong. you cannot punish someone for what they might do.

Who knows where these images will end up?

You have copyright of images taken of yourself (without your consent, and in this context the victim didn't give consent to store the images).

I agree with your idea of not baiting though : hard to see how you could anyway....

lotta, I thought gullibility and naivety were the main reasons of 419eater' existence?

- Svetlana the porn-a-like 20 year old is really interested in your inner self (providing you send her $600 for her airline ticket...

The girl might have been naive and maybe even a little stupid (maybe had a few drinks?), but I fail to see how being able to use a computer and getting a little R rated would mean she should be aware that the guy would save the pics.

Stupidity is not a reason to justify dishonesty/impropriety.. If it were we might all stop baiting...

There is a scam where a scammer blackmails the vic by threatening to post the naked pictures all over the internet. If all he's doing is keeping them for himself then there's not much can be done really. All your friend can do is put it down to her own stupidity/naiveness and learn from her mistake.

Would it have been okay if he had stored it as a video? Surely she knew that he could save the video if it was coming into his computer. SO, still images are wrong but a video would be okay? Confused

Flawed logic.

The guy that stored the images wasn't dishonest. As a matter of fact, he was more than forthcoming. He told her he was saving the pics. He didn't have to.

The victim put the stuff over the internet. I think that is consent enough. It is okay for one time viewing only? Again, flawed logic.

It read to me like the lady in question didn't know you could take grabs of webcam images and was told after the event that he'd saved them for his collection. The only question I see is this. Is taking hard copies of her display any different to commiting the images to memory? In my opinion the guy's a jerk but not a scammer and the girl shouldn't have been so stupid. Now if he emailed her threatening to post her images all over the net unless she pays him 5k then it would have been a different matter...

Well, if he just has them on his computer for personal use, I don't see a problem with it, I know your friend's privacy feels as if it has been violated. But if she tries to take action, or threaten the guy, he may be more inclined to post the pictures on the internet.

Threatening to circulate them is down right dirty but not a scam, which is what we deal with here at eater.

Meow, he has threatened her that he will circulate the pictures if he cannot stay with her when he comes to the States because "that isn't how friends treat friends." Also, she doesn't want to take actions; she is too afraid and foolishly thinks that if she gives into his demands he will give them to her. Of course not. He will just keep asking for something else.

Regardless of the OP's seemingly making his story up as he goes along, here's a link to show that scammers are known to send people webcams and ask them to pose naked for them, only to blackmail them with the evidence
