From the local news:

Quote:
Law to tackle unwanted spam passed
NZPA | Wednesday, 28 February 2007

The Government's anti-spam bill was passed last night with a promise it would help stem the avalanche of unwanted e-mails clogging New Zealand in-boxes.

Communications Minister David Cunliffe said when he introduced the Unsolicited Electronic Messages bill, spam made up to 80 per cent of e-mail traffic worldwide.

Mr Cunliffe said last night the law would contribute to an international crackdown on spam and prevent New Zealand becoming a haven for spammers.

The bill bans unsolicited electronic messages and requires senders of commercial messages to include accurate sender information and allow recipients to unsubscribe.

It also bans porn spam, which provides links to websites.

Those who breach the bill face a tough regime of fines.

Critics have said it will do little to stem the flow of spam – most of which comes from offshore.

But Mr Cunliffe said it was important New Zealand was not seen as a soft touch for spammers.

They wouldn't be on the address lists that *I* use if they hadn't already contacted me. Well, us. If they send mail to an anti-spammer/scammer group, do you think they can claim that the responses are unsolicited? Twisted Evil

The way I see it, I access an international email server to send my "unsolicited email". I believe backtracing the IP resolves to the US.

Seeing as it doesnt originate here I claim ignorance.

Now I'm off to the supermarket to give my son a hiding.

I doubt one would have to worry about a genuione ASEM as a prosecution or charge would be highly unlikely. The meat of the bill as it were is unsoliceted COMMERCIAL emails, which is a far cry from baiting

Sorry Mike, she also got a bill passed the other day that makes it illegal to give your child a slap on the wrist or a kick up the backside.
