I am asking this question out of pure curiosity. Yes, I know we have joined forces to waste the lads time and to prevent innocent people from becoming victms of these criminals.
Aside from the above,

I wish I could be as noble as that and say its to stop crime but its not. I love to take the piss and this is one more outlet for me to do so.

I too have purely selfish interest - for fun, to test set wits agaist a criminal's and I get sadistic pleasure in needling the scammers and wasting their resources

It's a cross between collaborative storytelling and a role-playing game. It's also fun to be sticking it to those cyber-scavengers.

In "real life," I'm so eager to be liked that I'm easy to take advantage of, so having any sort of power over another person is a new and highly thrilling experience for me.

Plus, I really like role-playing sorts of things, like yastreb said.

A few reasons.

1) I genuinely don't like scammers. Anything I can do to screw them up is cool by me.

2) I enjoy pitting my wits against other people. I used to hang out on a lot of debate forums, but I find baiting much more satisfying.

3) It's fun.

4) It's cheap.

5) I get a trophy at the end of it.

At first it was because it was fun and noble and all that and that I was doing something useful, and that is true to an extent. Then one of my oldest friends after I had explained it to him said "Ah it's like roleplaying."

So I guess I am just an old frustrated gamer.

I have given this a lot of thought and have to say that I have no idea at all. I could be out in the sunshine or sailing. Now I have myopia, RSI finger wise, hurtful comments from the wife about no jobs getting done, headaches from remembering who's who and my bum needs to be surgically removed from my chair.

A few years ago (when I was still in school) I read an article in a magazine about a man, a fairly smart university graduate, who'd sent thousands of pounds of his life savings to a girl called Divine something-or-other, who claimed to be the child of a dead president. This man was interviewed about how much he'd lost, and he regretted having to send so much money, but even with a full detail report on 419 scammers, he refused to believe the magazine crew. He was convinced that the money from Divine would be arriving any day now.

I found this incredibly sad. This poor man had had almost all his money stolen but he was still willing to work hard, get a better job, just to get MORE cash to send to Divine. Clearly this girl, whoever she was, was a terrible criminal. Why hadn't the police caught her yet?

Later I figured out that the police wouldn't be able to track her down, as she probably wasn't using her real name or picture. Shame.

When I first found out about scambaiting (from a newspaper article about Shiver Metimbers!) I was incredibly impressed. True, it isn't the same as getting these people arrested, but for every scambaiter's time spent, the Lad is wasting time that he could be using to scam a real-life guy like the one in the first article. I realised it was worth doing, and I've decided to try and see if I can make it work. I'm still very new to this as yet, but hopefully I too can be an annoyance and hindrance to any Lads who dream of innocent victims like that businessman.

I started because I hate criminals with a passion, especially those who are never going to get what's coming to them. I carried on because, as has been said, it's just like an RPG, but with real people.

Education, education, education. TBH I don't really bait, but recommend this site to as many people as I can.

It's funny, and a much more effective way of educating people, even if they don't always agree with what people here do (and most do), they still get educated.

I bait mostly for the money, if you have been a member for over 2 years, Shiver pays you �5 per lad that you are baiting, it's quite a money maker if you have a lot of lads on the go.
