I am so fed up with these e-mails. Today, I won the British lottery twice in the same day. Do these people really think we are that naive? This scares me because of my mother who is very trusting of others and naive as can be. I'm going to sit and think on this one a while and try to come up with a good one for this guy. There were 5 words spelled wrong
and the grammar is pathetic. I'm going to check out some of the things everyone on here has done and have a good laugh.

Later,
Cathy

Welcome aboard, Cat.

Remember to read the stickies and take things slowly, and don't be afraid to ask questions - although use the Search option first.

Oh, and sign up for a mentor while you're at it.

Little rule of thumb as well....

Never point out the lads mistakes, why teach them to be a better scammer.

Edit: WooHoo, my turn....and kiss your spare time goodbye!!!!

Welcome to the fold Cat_1989

There is a serious side and a fun side to what we do. Several times already this year we have seen scams targetted at defrauding or abusing charities. Of course, once we have established that they are bogus, we attack them with a vengeance, in a calculated and methodical way. This is usually done on a communal basis with members pooling and sharing information which is passed to the authorities.

Being able to achieve the joy of making the 'lads', as we call them, perform the most ridiculous of tasks and supply evidence of them doing this is made easy by some here, but it is not easy at all, and takes quite some skill and knowledge.

A mentor will be invaluable to you in allowing you to use the correct tactics and avoid you making silly mistakes, wasting time and having the most fun. The only thing a lad should know about you if he catches on to you, is that everything you told ever him was a lie.

Hello Cat,

I'm new here to this post, but not in 'the war'. I'm a veteran in 'the battle'.

I too have been told hundreds of times that I won an international Internet Lottery twice in a day..6 numbers from 001 to 100--there aren't that many people on the planet but I am always told that there are several other winners who had the same #s. The odds on this would have made Einstein apoplectic.

It's sad indeed that unfortunately this is one scam that the lads hold on to and use repeatedly. Often based in Holland.. They prey on the fact that potential victims might have a glimmer of hope that luck knocked on the computer. It ain't gonna happen.

I love to bait the mugus, but I delete all the Lottery scams because I know where it winds up and there's not much chance to string them along for as much as I want.

Just please tell your mom in Ohio to NEVER believe that she is going to get wealthy over the Internet from complete strangers, because it is not going to happen. And tell her to reject all offers on more-than-the-amount money orders too, while I'm at it here. THAT could wind a person up behind jail bars and the mugu laughing all the way to WU.

cheers, jervis tetch---mad hatter

Hi Cat, Lottery scammers are difficult to bait. They want your credentials up front - passport, driver's license, bank details, address, phone number etc. If you don't offer these up immediately, they will drop you.

You can send them a load of trash - wrong information, scans they can't open or are corrupted beyond recognition. Don't send them anything that they can repurpose to scam another victim. Even the most ridiculous fake 'celebrity' passports have turned up back here that somebody has sent to them for a laugh.

The other 'rule' is to not involve innocent third parties eg by giving them the phone number of your local Scientology or KKK branch.

If you give them a phone number, it can either be a 'dead' or 'baiter' line, you will find many in the stickies. If you really want to speak to them, use VOIP (cheap) or an unregistered mobile (expensive).

You have to work hard if you want to bait a lottery scammer and it is not very rewarding other than knowing that you have wasted some of their time.

In just a little while you will look forward the emails. Its like a chess game where the scammer makes the first wrong move by emailing you. He's lost the game already. Sometimes its much more, his money, time, self respect, his skin and in the case of a bait by the great Mr. Fishe, the shirt off his back are at risk.
Welcome and stick around for a while.

Welcome! If you don't feel ready to bait yet (and you won't be half ready until you have read and memorised the Stickies and learned how to bait safe Laughing ) then you can do your bit by explaining to your mother and others like her how these scammers operate and that she should be extremely sceptical about any offer that's Too Good To Be True because that's exactly what it is. The scammers target good hearted, trusting but possibly naive people and so the more family and friends you can personally warn about internet scams the better. There are still a frighteningly large number of people out there who are either unaware of these scams or who are too easily persuaded to participate. Baiting is only one weapon we can use against these criminals - raising public awareness is another so spread the word!

Yeah, I guess I did answer my own question which sounded stupid!!! While Mother is very naive and trusts most people, thankfully, she doesn't use a computer! I guess what I meant to say was it scares me to know there are people out there who do use computers just like her who really would fall for this. It's kinda like I assumed that everybody who has e-mail wouldn't fall for this, but I know that's not true. I think I had my head up my a$$ when I said that!!!! No, I worry because scams via computers are just the latest ones. As you all know, door to door, phone and snail mail scams have been around forever and I think she's fell for one or two, not out of being stupid, just by trusting in others who seem convincing. I'm sure we've all believed lies before at one time or another and well..it's just plain scary.

Before I start this, I am going to read up a lot on it. I listened to the phone ones on here tonight and don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. Keep it up guys and gals--these thieves deserve it.

PS: Bill Gates is sharing his fortune....again!!! I just have to send 10 percent of my winnings to a charity.

People are naive. My parents were both very intelligent and suspicious people, also very honest.

I went to see them once and they showed me a letter (snail mail in those days) that had come from Spain (I glanced at it and knew it was a scam) saying they had won something like the equivalent of 10,000 (this was a long time ago) in a lottery and asked me if I'd entered it on their behalf.

I said 'no', and asked if they'd entered it. They said 'no', so I asked how they might have won a lottery they had neither heard of nor entered. They then said they'd read it carefully and it said that 'as a result of a mix up' their number had won. I said that if that were the case, they were taking someone else's winnings, and was that honest.

Despite this and the ensuing discussion in which I assured them it was a scam, they asked me to 'phone the number and speak to the 'claim agent'. As I speak Spanish, I did so and to my surprise (not!) 'Mrs. Maria Rodriguez' or whatever the made up name was, had a remarkably deep voice, did not speak Spanish, and had a very strong Nigerian accent.

My parents went on about this for weeks, convinced that it was not a scam because 'nobody would do a thing like that'

My father spent two years working in Nigeria and knew how much fraud and crime there was there, but even he was not entirely convinced this was a scam.

Just goes to show. Sadly, old folk are greatly at risk due to their naivety.

Nothing necessary to apologize by you on your part.

I'm guessing you heard the voice-recording of Shiver on his way to WU only to get hit by a car, yes? I laff my ass off every time I listen to it! A true stroke of genius!
