gmail and IP address query

over the past couple of weeks i was e mailing people in north america
concerning renting property,me being clever i used my google mail account.

so i e mailed one gent and had several replies to my gmail account.
now im using a laptop,going wifi to my router.the router is attached to my stand alone.

a day goes by and the bloke who i never got round to replying to has now
e mailed my ISP account asking me have i received his emails.

now this has spooked me.did check thru my ISP account on outlook express
and I DIDNT email him from there.
i then e mailed him asking HTF he got my account,his reply

so from my IP address off the laptop he found my IP address from the stand alone then my ISP e mail account.

now ive asked for this piece of kit or its name and he hasnt replied.

does anyone know of it??

Did you use your name?

Maybe the man just knows how to use Google.

Google yourself and see if your email comes up. You might be very surprised.

googled both e mail accounts and nothing comes up at all.
there is no relation, name wise, between both accounts.

You are running your laptop through the wifi to a home router then to the ISP connection? You only have one IP address; the address of your connection to the ISP and the router.

I sounds like you used a gmail account and then he sent a reply to a different email account. If you used your real name then he can use an email lookup for your name.

More info is needed. Exactly what happen. This is confusing so far.

Just wondering...did you email from your gmail account(eg.log in at gmail.com) or use a mail client like Outlook Express or Endura?
I think that if you use a mail client it will show your IP

i was e mailing the chap off my wifi laptop using my gmail account.
he sent several e mails to my gmail account which i didnt reply to.

when i went to check my mail(thru outlook express) on the pc(not laptop)in the other room of house,he had found my ISP account and e mailed there.

readnotify.com is a scary thing. It can report the IP address of any PC that opens an email.

However that still does not explain how the man got your ISP email address from your IP address or why he would bother.

The IP address would give him the ISP, but he would have to guess your username. Is it the same as your gmail username?

If you have a static IP allocation then he just looked you up in whois.

I still don't understand why he would bother to do it.

both e mail names are completely different thats whats the scary
thing about it.

i was led to believe that using gmail, no IP address can be found,so no one can locate you.

ive asked him for the name of the software so i can post it and we can use
it against the gmail addys of the lads.
im awaiting his reply.

Asking the obvious but .....have you tried sending an email to one of your other A/cs and see what shows up in the headers

^^^ There is no IP address in a gmail email, not just a bad one. All IP addresses in the headers should be good ones or start with "10" (Class A private network).

Your IP address is fairly easy to get if you were opening mails in OE. Have you tried Googling your IP address? It may show up on some guestbook or something.

Intriguing how he could find your ISP email account.

Maybe he has more than one properties/email addys to where you think you didnt email him from OE, but you did?

There's always a very simple answer for these things. My guess: you screwed up somewhere along the line, but you've forgotten it or you aren't aware of your mistake yet.

Yes. We have seen many members write in a panic that a lad has hacked their box or taken over their email account or other such problems only to discover later that they forgot the password or made some other simple mistake.

sorry but i made the point of being very carefull and havent screwed up.all my e mail requests regarding renting was thru gmail.

im in no panic about it but very curious to how the hell he did it,as if its true what he did,how useful would that be to the forum members.thats my point of asking.

i didnt e mail him thru OE using my ISP account,ive checked and double checked sent,deleted,forward,reply etc in there just only his reply

Just a thought... do you have html graphics disabled in your gmail account? Even using webmail, when you open a message with embedded html graphics, your machine reaches out to the web to get the graphic, registering a hit on the web server with your IP. (At least that is how I understand it... plz correct me if I am wrong.)

Of course, even then how did he go from having your IP to having your email addy I have no idea unless he was able to talk the ISP into giving the info up.
