So how does AOL know i've done this or not? What's the point?

It is basically harvesting email addresses. If AOL ever struck a deal like that, I am sure they would have informed the press.

It's a hoax chain mail email, just delete it, all it does is clog up servers with idiots sending to everyone they know, sick fucks using a babies photo Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

It's just a chain letter. I dont know what they're meant to achieve, but they annoy people and consume system resources unnecessarily, just like spam. AOL aren't going to give anyone money becuase you send an email. Delete it, tell your friend to do the same, and do so with all other emails of a similar nature.
