Like I said earlier, I accidentally only bought one of each stock on my first day. Then, the second day I went and bought a bunch of shares of the stocks that I picked, which is what I intended on day one. Had I bought them like I intended, my eBay stock would be doing a decent 6.5% or so. It went up a lot that first day, then tanked on day 2. Crying or Very sad

My Smurfitt Stone whatever's tanked at the last minute- it was up quite a bit earlier so I bought several hundred more shares that I was going to sell.

I know *some* things about the stock market, but not a whole lot. So my questions are

1) What does "Sell Short" mean?

2) What does "Buy to Cover" mean?

I'm guessing buy to cover is buying a new stock to cover for a stock that is not doing well. I'm not sure what sell short exactly means, so help me out Smile

Selling short is selling shares you don't own. The idea is, when the price drops, you will then buy the shares at the lower price, (buy to cover) and make a killing.

Say you think NATL is getting ready to drop big time. Right now it's trading at $100 per share, and you think it's going to drop to $50 per share. You can ask your broker, who probably has some shares of NATL, to sell 100 shares for you right now (Sell Short). So the broker sells the shares and credits your account $10,000. Now you owe the broker 100 shares of NATL, and you will have to repay them. The idea is to wait until the market price for the shares drops to $50 per share, then you buy the 100 that you owe the broker(Buy to Cover). So if all goes well, the market price drops to $50, you tell your broker to buy 100 shares at $50, for $5,000. Those shares go back to the broker and you pocket $5,000. I made a few bucks (in the game) selling short yesterday. When you see heavy volume and the price dropping like a rock, climb on board and make some money. Then if you meet the CEO of that company, crying about the lousy day they had on the market, you can tell him it wasn't all bad. Wink
