Hi,
I responded to an add on Craigslist for a John Deere tractor at super price. Figured it was a local seller since I'm in North Carolina. I just got an email from the lister saying that he's in Canada and want's to do this "deal" through an escrow/shipping company.
It's clearly a scam, but I responded to the add from work and now the lister has my name. I replied to his email with a request for the name of the escrow company. At this point, should I simply back out, or is there anything to do or report here?
Thank you,
TractorMan |

"simply back out" is right.
If you get the URL for the escrow website, post it on the Fake banks forum here on Eater. |

I'd say the safest thing is to stop all contact with the lister now, or you could just send a message stating you got a better deal elsewhere and you're not interested anymore.
If the lister happens to give out the website address of the escrow/shipping company, feel free to post it here and we'll check if it's a fake site and shut it down. |

OK,
I'll wait to see if the person sends me the name and contact info of the escrow/shipping company.
Thanks,

email one:
Hi XXXX,
I've received your email regarding my tractor on craigslist.org
The tractor is in full working condition and looks great.
It will be shipped from Canada as I now live here. I want to use a company that handles shipping and payment too. Something between escrow and cash on delivery. I get paid after they deliver the tractor to you in US. They have offices in Canada and there in US too. Using their service I can have the tractor delivered to your address in 5-7 working days and we can both feel safe about this. I will pay the shipping charges but I am not offering insurance. If you want it insured during shipping you need to pay an extra $200. Payment will be made after shipping starts and you will be able to confirm shipment with the company before making payment. Money will be sent to the escrow company. The escrow company is in Canada and your money will stay with them until they deliver the tractor.
We can agree on a testing period while the money will still be in escrow. I can give 3 days to have the tractor inspected at a dealer of your choice.
Please tell me if this will work out for you and if there is anything else that you would like to know.
Alex
email 2:
XXXX,
If you want to move forward with this purchase you can go ahead and register at www.imaa-online.com with the shipping company. They will handle shipping, payment and title transfer. I've worked with then previously on many ocasions and they gave me 40% discount on fees. Also please let me know if you would like the JD to be insured during delivery, like I said that would be an extra $200 added to the price.
Please provide them with your shipping address, will need it for papers.
Let me know if we have a deal or not and if you have any question feel free to email me.
Alex
So what should I do now? |

That's a fake escrow website, the domain was only registered 4 days ago, I have posted it on the forum at aa419.org and it will be taken care of:

Saw one Craiglist Maine for an 06 Ford Compact with bucket, brush hog, and back hoe etc... all for 10k (s/b about 20k min). The person posted his email. I did a quick search and shockingly he had posted it on Craigslist CA, NV etc... I guess somethings are to good to be true
Oh another charming one is people "selling" $30k horse trailers for $10k...
And I just noticed that I brought up a 3 year old thread... feh. |

@ stevethrower, please don't necro old posts, take some time to read through the forum rules regarding necroing posts:
*** 419 EATER FORUM RULES AND F.A.Q. PLEASE READ ***
Quote: |
Please avoid thread necromancy (that is: posting in a thread that has been inactive for several weeks to bump it back to the top of a forum again). Old threads have usually little relevance anymore. Also, members that posted in it may not be around anymore. If you really want to bring up an old discussion again because you have something of value to add, post a new thread and put a link in it to the old thread. That way people do not have to read through all the old posts to see what is new. |
