As much as I like my Olympus C5050, I want a proper SLR digital camera, that I can change lenses on, also I'm sick of missing shots with the Olympus because of its abysmal 'thinking' time.
I nearly bought a Canon Rebel 350D on Ebay 30 minutes ago, For 330, but someone outbid me at the last minute. at least I cost him extra.
Any recommendations? |

I have a Rebel 350D and I love it. I don't think you can go wrong with one of them, though there are newer models of the Rebel out now. One of my favorite sites for digital camera research and information is www.dpreview.com. You might find it helpful as you make a decision. Make sure you check out the forum too; many people post pictures they've taken and have good questions about all sorts of stuff that might help you in deciding.
Also, I'd strongly suggest purchasing the camera you choose from a legitimate vendor for that particular camera manufacturer. The reason being that many cameras on the market, such as those sold on eBay, may be what is called gray market cameras. Those are cameras that are sold in other markets, such as Asia, and therefore the manufacturer may not honor the warranty even though the camera is new. There's better information about this on the dpreview.com site and forum.
Have fun looking and good luck shopping! |

Good site that. I read the review for the Rebel earlier.
Theres another one up (new) in 40 minutes, its already 370 I may yet buy a new Nikon D40, for similar money, (379 incl 2Gb memory card) I have asked what the score is re the guarantee, and if it is UK market. Just off to read the review.
Having said that, the full price Canon must cost twice as much for a reason. |

Go to a camera shop, try out cameras. Canon and Nikon are the big two, but Sony and Konika have good offerings, too. With many of these cameras, it's about the lens and not the body. As far as the body goes, figure out which one feels best to you before you buy.
For instance, my father has a Canon Rebel XT (350D internationally), and I have a Nikon D50. He prefers his Canon, I prefer my Nikon, and it's all about feel. To me, the Nikon feels more substantial, and the body is a bit bigger, while I find the Canon offerings "plasticky".
Hope that helps. |

I wanted a 350D some time ago, but at the time I couldn't spare the cash. I just upgraded to a DSLR myself, and as I had a bit of spare money this time I was going to go with the Canon 400D. Because of local supply problems, I spent a little extra and bought the Nikon D80 with the bundled 18-135mm lens. It's a fantastic camera, but will take me a while to learn how to use it properly!
By the way, I can recommend http://www.steves-digicams.com/ for some really good in-depth reviews. |

I just bought a new Canon Rebel 350D, this one went for 372, with a 2Gb memory card chucked in, the cheaper one earlier was returned stock, this is brand new unopened with a 12 month UK guarantee (I bore in mind what you said, the recon/returned stock only has 3 month seller's guarantee). Seller has a feedback score of 19,000 odd nearly all +ve.
And no its not Mariam Abacha!
Now to get on with earning the money to pay for it..... |

Yes, that brings me to another point. A good SLR is one that you will need to grow into. Learning to use it properly is half the fun.
And Shiv, I am quite jealous. Mind that puddle of drool I deposited under your tripod.
You DO use a tripod, don't you?
Sorry, got into my photographer mode. |

Woot! Parcel Link just delivered it, out of the blue, I didnt even know they'd despatched it.
I'm surprised how light it is, though I haven't put it all together with the battery and lens yet.
I had a proper Canon 35mm SLR, an AE1, with a couple of lenses, still have somewhere for that matter. I guess this is the digital version. I enjoyed that hugely, though the cost of film and processing always put me off using it the way I can with a digital camera.
Once the RL pressure is off in a week or so, I will get snapping.
Now to break it to Hayley that I (ahem) may be getting a new camera soon, nothing too expensive.... |

I've heard good reports about the new Sony SLRs. They were late getting in to this market, but seem to have got it right.

I may be in the market for a new camera later in the year and may go for one. |

I have a Nikon D100 and a new D200 that I use semi professionally. The Nikon choice is a evolutionary thing brought about by a HUGE investment in Nikon lenses from previous film cameras. I used Olympus cameras previously but they let me down when the going got tough in conditions of extreme cold. None of my Nikons ever let me down.
The D100 was the first digital SLR I owned and it has given me good service. I did have a problem with dirt on the sensor, again due to extreme conditions, but Nikon cleaned it for me in less than half an hour while I waited.
I also have other smaller digital cameras from FujiFilm and Olympus. What I will say is that the Nikon D100 shots are not 'ready to go' like the other cameras. They always need tweaked in Photoshop to add saturation and contrast.
The D200 is considerably better in this respect and I hear good things about the newer cheaper Nikon SLRs - but I need the ruggedness of the D200.
I don't think that there is a lot to choose technically between Nikon and Canon. Swings and roundabouts. If you don't have a collection of Canon or Nikon lenses already, there's not much to choose between them. Which model you buy is down to what you need to spend.
Read lots of reviews before spending your money. Once you get on the lens bandwagon, it's difficult to change horses! |

Congrats Roy, you're going to enjoy that camera! Of course I am slightly biased, being a confirmed Canonite.... |

One key point I make to others considering a camera purchase is the availability of 3rd party lenses and accessories. Both the Nikon and Canon marques are well catered for in that respect. Pentax don't fare as well. I'd tend to avoid some of the lesser known or new to the D-SLR market brands for a while.
An interesting brand to consider is Sigma. They use a different image sensor (Foveon X3) which has some technical advantages over Bayer CCD or CMOS sensors.
fwiw, I have now had some hands-on experience with someone else's Canon 400D fitted with a Sigma 18-200mm lens. I'd only used manual focus film cameras before but a few hours using it has created a favourable impression. |

It's beautiful. I took a few pictures of the TV (most had a black stripe, which is down to the fact that every TV 'frame' is 1/24 of a second, but the exposure was a lot less than that). I love it when the flash pops up as you press the shutter.
My Olympus (non SLR) makes a digital imitation of the 'cherchunk' noise that the Canon makes, but with this you feel it, its real. I only worry that it'll give me camera shake, but it's satisfying, like my old Merc's doors shutting, and the 'clank - shoom!' of my Zippo lighting. To say nothing of my Harley - the more I type the more I realize I'm drawn to chunky feeling and loud machinery. If only I could get a PC with an old mechanical typewriter keyboard.....
Sorry, I've been out drinking Seffe Belgian beer. Just the 8 point something percent.
Before I give good feedback on Ebay, though, I'm going to email them about the fact I do have an issue with this:
Quote: |
This product is 100% BRAND NEW SEALED IN Canon RETAIL BOX , everything is keeping in the original manufactory status. This package includes the following warranty: |
Well the camera hasn't a mark on it, but the box wasn't shrink wrapped (though I appreciate anyone could do that) and none of the bags were sealed apart from the manuals and CD-ROMs. Though to be fair, they had included in the box a lead for the charger with the right spec plug. |
