The feds grabbed the Canadian founders of the non-US based Neteller company, the largest online money transferer in the world. Looks like this publicly traded company is going to be in trouble (hope none of you Brits own their stock!). Again, another attempt by the US gov't to stop Americans from sports gambling online, this time using the PATRIOT ACT.

one was in LA, the othr the Virgin Islands. The Gov't has sworn to uphold its gambling laws, even if the "criminals" are not in the US.
The same thing happened to Bet On Sports. The british citizens were pasing thru the US and got arrested in the airport during a layover. They're only facing 25 years in prison, though. |

So potentially you could arrive in the US, not knowing that you're guilty of a crime there for doing something that's legal in your own country, and be arrested?? That's a bit scary! |

that's exactly what happened. You violate the US laws, no matter where you are or what nationality you are....come in the US and face the rest of your life in our prisons. Even if what you did is legal in your own country and that your company is publicly traded on your national stock market.
Your Brits enjoy being able to place a wager on Arsenal or whatever without having to go through someoby who works for Tony Soprano in the Chicago mafia outfit. In my little town, I personally know 3 bookies (bookmakers), and they have ties to the mob.. |

the site allowed US people to gamble. So the BOS people got nailed for racketeering an not paying taxes on income that wasn't allowed by US law. Go figure. Offshore gambling will soon be a thing of the past for Americans |

When I was growing up in Boston in the 1960s, before "The Game" (i.e. the state lottery in Boston) became legal, it was quite normal and legal to buy a ticket for the Irish National Lottery.
What's the difference?
Can a Bostonian be arrested when he comes home if he visits Las Vegas and plays at a casino? Or, better, can a Las Vegas casino owner be arrested in Boston if he lets a Bostonian play in his casino? |

its not illegal to PLACE a bet, its illegal to BOOK them (that's why the mafia loves it so much, its very profitable).. They're not coming after individual bettors, but people who take their bets, even if its legal in their home country. |

gambling is allowed in various forms the US. the only state where bookmaking (sports) is completely legal is Nevada.
It all depends on location, if you are in an area of a state that allows casinos, yes, you can gamble there. However, if you call a buddy in Vegas to place a bet for you, that's a felony.
the Irish national lottery is illegal, btw. |

I disagree. It is illegal to place internet wagers as a player in the USA. However, the feds rarely prosecute the players. |

I tried to open an account with them and they were terrible - locked me out of my account without an explanation and refused to respond to my e-mails. Their customer service has gone downhill over the past five months. I'm not in the US and they called me at 22h30 GMT and woke me up. I took this as the final warning of their incompetence and have never bothered unlocking my account.
I'm very glad I never deposited money with them, but I know some people will be very frightened about the money they have with these creeps.

They can do the same thing to you with a civil lawsuit. This is what happened to the dude in Aruba who's one of the prime suspects in the Holloway case. He showed up at JFK airport on his way to some TV interview in NY, and the Holloway family attornies had him served with a summons to appear as defendant in a civil wrongful death lawsuit. |
