I just set up a myspace profile, with little to no info about myself visible on it. I have recieved several invitations to add friends, all from young, pretty females, and their profiles have identical statements about just getting out of a relationship and looking for fun.

Is the the opening lines on a scam? If so, how can I bait them along?

About like you would bait them on YIM. If they are scammers, they'll probably want to chat. If they are really after money, just wait for the sob stories to start coming in.

Otherwise, it's a bit hard to tell you which one is a possible scam without seeing any of them.

I've gotten a few of those. Most of the time, on their profiles is a link to a porn site of some sort. I doubt there's much baiting value in the, but you can give it a go and see what happens.

Hi folks,
I have also a question about some e-mails I received.
In ICQ I had private chat with a lady from USA. She gave me her mail adress and I my mail adress (the mail adress I usually share).
She sent an e-mail to me, telling me, that she lost her parrents and that she will love me so and that she is in Nigeria at the moment.
I has some doubts caused by, that she is so sure to love me and that her family name is "Love".
Then she sent me an e-mail, that she is stranded in Nigeria, someone stole all her money, the hotel manager says "till you don't pay the bills, I don't let you go, at least I will send you to prison". She ment, when I send some money, it could solve the problem. I gave her the advice, she may contact the US embassy.
She replied "Thank you so much" and later she said "The embassy says "No" please call the hotel manager". I did this, at least it was not sucsessful. (I used a telephone company and the tape says "5 per minute, is this sure? Because later she asked me to call again.)
Now she is begging again, the hotel manager has order to give her no food, but she is allowed to send e-mails. I asked her about the hotel address.
But I am not sure about all this.
Are there details that may indicate that this must be a scam?
I wasn't careless and did the help so, that it may be worthless to betrayers but helpful to the victim, if it would be true.

Absolutely everything about is says scam. The hotel scam is one of the most common ones. Don't touch it, but post up her email address so we can have some fun at the scammer's expense.

Yes, very common!!! She will sound like she is on the verge of starvation!!!! 'HELP, a man is trying to break into my room!!! I think he wants to rape me!!!'
Send no money, if you have trouble believing this is fake, trust us, just ignore her. Nobody will die.

PLEASE, there are scum and scammers all over the internet!
DON'T GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.
Bank accounts, phone numbers, addresses.......

I don't told her a secret. But good to see, that my doubts were right, then I think, if she really has trouble, she wouldn't never speak about a marriage or so.
I will continue the game.

RF
Please don't "continue the game" if you are using your real email address. It's best to stop communicating with her. Open a new email account and bait her from there.

I tried to force her to answer quickly, that if she will not answer quickly, she couldn't get the money.
She didn't reply yet.
I noticed some similarities to a Miss Preston.
Well, now I look forward to the next mails.

The e-mail address I gave her is not important to me, I use this, when I have to say an e-mail address to persons that are not trustworthy.
Important e-mail adresses I would never use for this.
But please explain what advantage may I have, when I create a new email account and bait her by this.

it is merely the disadvantage you have using an adress with real information... Some of these guys do everything for cash, even searching your country for you... They have something of you, and they will use it. If you make fun of these guys, do so with them having no clues about you. Best is a Gmail or Fastmail adress (you can PM quite a lot of people for an invite if you don't already have one, if you want one, hit me Wink), as these won't give your IP-adress away.

It's web.de, seems to be like this, they have to keep my data secretly.
One question, do you know the name DESMOND OKECHUKWU?
This should be the hotel manager.
Another question, she askes not only for the money, but for my address too.
Is this usual at transactions like this or not?
I will not reply the mail but I want to know, was it the scammer's idea to ask my address or the idea of Western Union.
I have a screenshot about technical problems with the website, so I have an excuse.
Here I quote the e-Mail I received:
Quote:
Honey,

i thank you so much for your kindness and i really appreciate it.the director was here since and that was why i could not reply your mail cos he gave an order not to allow me make use of anything like, phone, computer and other things but the hotel manager allowed me to make use of his lap top after the director left the hotel.

i am right here on manager's laptop to reply you.

here is the infornmation on how to send the money via western union money transfer

1)..Receivers Name..............DESMOND OKECHUKWU
2).... CITY........................LAGOS
3).......COUNTRY.............NIGERIA
4)......MONEY TRANSFER CONTROL NUMBER
5)......TEXT QUESTION........HOTEL MANAGER'S NAME
6)..........ANSWER................ JIMMY

SECOND
SEND ME YOUR ME THE INFORMATIONS GIVEN TO YOU BY WESTERN UNION

1) SENDERS NAME...............YOUR FULL NAME
2)YOUR HOME ADDRESS
3)YOUR PHONE NUMBER

PLZ SEND THE MONEY AND GET ME THE INFORMATIONS AS SOON AS YOU SEND IT.I AM RIGHT HERE ONLINE WAITING FOR YOU

THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN AND I WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN

YOUR PRETTY AND BEAUTIFUL WIFE
JACKLYN

Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/evt=42973/*http://www.yahoo.com/preview>

I wonder, she will get no food, but can use the manager's computer.
And I wonder again, I never promised her, that I will merry her.
Pretty strange.

RF, just drop this one. Like lotta said, get a new YIm and use that one. And don't give your address because she'll probably start sending you stolen goods or fake checks, or who knows what else.

Don't worry, I don't give my address. And I stop to answer the mails.
But one thing I want to know, is it usual in money transfer that the sender has to say his address?
