I set up a ID on Cupidbay to lure a love scammer. But I feel a little guilty lying to someone who may not be a scammer. The ID is completely false. And i found a rather fat and dumpy looking middle aged man's pic to go with it. It just happens that he has 2.8 million dollars in the bank.

I figured anyone interested in HIM must be a scammer. But what if she's just a lonely middle aged woman looking for a penpal? How do you tell the difference? Wait until money is mentioned?

I'd kind of hate to play someone who has no intention of scamming me.

Usually you can tell by the initial contact, scammers will try to get you on to email, they will be an attractive 23 year old....

If you are worried, don't lead the person on, just talk with them for a while. A leapord will always show his spots, same as a scammer will always lead you to the scam.

If they start talking about how they are unhappy in their country and want to be in yours, they are having problems of late, they are stuck in a hotel etc.. Anything that will lead to a cash request, It is a scam and bait away.

If you're really worried about it then feel free to pm me a copy of the message you get. It's usually pretty easy to spot a scammer letter right from the off.

To attract a romance scammer, your character doesn't need to be rich!
They don't care if you're rich or not. They figure that any US or UK man can come up with a couple of thousand dollars.
Which is almost true..........
The 'pro' Russian romance scammers actually don't read your profile, anyway!!!
You may attract a local 'Gold-digger' type with mentions of money in your profile, or a Nigerian.

it's usually pretty obvious from the get-go they are fake - poor spelling, professional quality photos, overly-friendly...

IMO the Russian scammers are more sophisticated than the nigerians as well.

oh yeah!

I guess I didn't have to worry. They are pretty obvious. Supermodels telling this ugly old mug what a fine specimen of manhood he is. Professional photography, etc.

My character is such a wart that teenage girls are trying to set him up with their friends as a joke. I have a negative rating, hehe. The scammers don't even mind if I spend my days in the strip clubs. A man needs a hobby, i guess.

wouldn't they make a nice couple?

What if you are in character and you find the person isn't really a scammer?

As an aside- a friend of mine about 5 years began writing someone from Russia. about everyone though she was scamming him. He went over there to visit her. She ended up moving here and they got married. They now have a daughter. A lot of what she was writing him and the friends translations sure seemd suspect at the time though.

are these scammers actually woman, or are lot of them men pretending to be women?

No telling. Only thing is sure, it isn't the cutie in picture!
With more experience you'll be able to spot them.
The best way to start is to create a safe persona at cupidbay or kissesline. Middleaged, male. Not much else is needed. The scammers will find you.
If you have any doubt about somebody who contacts you, ask for help before you bait. Don't play with a non scammer!
Stick to the notorious dating sites. Make your male fat, middleaged and bland.
If for some reason a real lady contacts you, be polite. Say you've found somebody or something.
The rare real one is pretty obvious.
Middleaged, and equally as unattractive as your character!

@Ocean

If you feel the person is not a scammer move on. There are many people out there who are not scammers, looking to meet someone. People looking to make a real connection do not ask for money. Read a few of the lovebaits before you dive in. As suggested, make yourself as undesirable as possible and you will more than likely attract a scammer.
Yes, a large portion of the love scammers are men pretending to be woman.

I tend to make my profile so obnoxious, totally unattractive attributes, nasty attitudes in the text boxes, and picture so disgustingly ugly. No real person would ever message me. Yet I still get lots of "I read your profile and like it". Cool

That goes with the territory. When I put up my fake profiles on the dating sites, I just pulled Winchester, VA out of my ass as where I live. I've already gotten 3 messages from real women in that area. I can't read them since I'm not a paying member, but the pictures in their profiles aren't professional photos of supposed Russian cuties.
