I want to let a lad connect to a virtual machine hosted by my real machine. If I run a VPN on my host machine, will the lad have any way of telling what my real IP is while connected to my VM? I don't want them to have any way to identify me or my network, as I don't want to be attacked physically or digitally, as unlikely as the two are. My VM is configured for NAT. Host machine running Linux Mint 18.3, VM running Windows 7 Ultimate.

QuickQ, hi and welcome to eater.

Based on your question, it sounds like you are communicating with a IRS or tech support scammer. We only deal with advance fee fraud / 419 lads (romance scams, inheritance scams, lottery scams, etc.). Since we do not deal with IRS/tech support scammers here this is not the forum to get advice on baiting them.

I am locking this thread as we don't discuss those scams here, however if you are dealing with a 419 scammer feel free to private message me or any mod with some details. If it's not related to scams we don't deal with here, we can look at opening the thread.
