Does anyone here own or drive a hybrid? Are they as good as they are claimed to be?
We have a diesel car which is great on fuel, but we probably won't get another because of the tax implications regarding the emissions.

We drive 60 plus miles a day, in town and on 'A' roads, the diesel returns around 60 mpg,
Would a hybrid match that?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I almost considered a hybrid vehicle until I learned about the HUGE carbon footprint left behind by their manufacture. If you want a coal bruner, get a Tesla.

Pastor Frank.

Yes, a German 1.6. We once got over 70 mpg on a run. In fact SWMBO, who drives it most, says its even better since the emissions control software was removed.

Thursten3rd, agreed, I understand batteries are shipped halfway round the world before they get put into a Prius. I don't even want to think about the toxic chemicals and metals used in their manufacture. Plus the Prius gets about the same fuel economy as a Diesel.

I can't afford a Tesla!. Also what range do you get? What's the charging time?
We looked at a Nissan Leaf then worked out that if we wanted to visit relatives up North it would take three days to get there!

^Yeah, I know what you mean about the steep price on the Teslas. Actually, if you can get your hands on a high-performance deisel, I think you would be money ahead.

Thursten

That's the problem, we like the Diesel engine car, we used to fill up once a week with a petrol car. Now for the same journey its three times a month. Instant savings. No Road Tax.
Good acceleration with the turbo, although to be honest we're more concerned with mpg than mph these days, but the current concerns with particulate emissions means potentially huge taxes for us. So we need to find an alternative.
