It could be that this lad simply found Major Reynolds is out of his league.

Were Reynolds to have had a serious accident while taking some outback survival training, his assistant could do some catching up on his affairs and contact your poor orphan lad. Then the assistant can rehook him with clear desire to help, only to be thwarted by Reynolds' meddling from his recovery quarters.
