Hey guys,
Just out of curiosity, why are scammers called 'lads'? It doesn't seem to be an acronym, and isn't a shortened version of 'scammer' or any synonym.
I can only assume the founders of Eater hailed from the Scottish highlands? |

It's short for "Lads from Lagos". Many lads are not from Lagos, but they're still lads. Nigeria is the most populous country in the region, but not the only one. The West African scam belt stretches from Cameroon (which is just outside West Africa) to Senegal, but it's not the only scam belt in the world.
Slavic lads are called vlads. They may even be named Vlad (short for Vladan or Vladimir). |

If I remember correctly, Lads from Lagos was a term first coined at either Scam-O-Rama or Ebola Monkey Man.
It might have been the title of one of the pioneering scambaits posted on one site or the other? |

I found a reference from 2001 at Scam-o-rama for "Lads from Lagos" in a filtered Google search. Anyone find anything earlier? |

The earliest I can find for the term is also from Scam-o-rama "Lads from Lagos".
The website was first published on the 9th of Dec 1999, and the earliest wayback machine archive of the site was made on the 20th of May 2000, where the homepage already has the strap-line "Lads from Lagos".
Probably safe to say that "lads" was used from the inception of the site. |
