Hey guys!
New to the forums here and also pretty new to the scambaiting world. A few months ago I got an email from some guys about an inheritance from some dead relative or something, and I decided to play along with a fake email (autostrips IPs and identifying metadata) and a proxied phone.
Ended up wasting a month of their time and a good little bit of their money from international calls (always made sure they called me, I never called them). Hopefully I'll have time to compile transcripts and post them at some point, was a pretty funny little endeavor.
Anyways, they figured out that I'm not real when I didn't show up for a face-to-face meeting and have emailed me a couple times about why I did what I did and whatever (to be more precise "do not play yourself. Why you did?".
I'm wondering at this point if I should email them back and confront them about the whole deal, or just leave it. Not sure if they're planning to try to send some kind of virus (which I doubt is possible since I only access email from an iDevice) or IP trace, if they're trying to like pity-scam me again, or they're just plain confused. What do ya'll do if they keep communicating with you like this?
They seem oddly calm about the whole situation (not cursing me or anything of that sort). I know I'd be pretty upset if I was them (I really screwed with those guys), so its just weird they're so calm. I expected an angry all-caps email back but instead just got the "why you did?"
Anyways, thanks for reading--let me know what you guys generally do at this point! Thanks! |

Don't burn them, just play along and social-engineer them into something. Yes I did manage to phone-bait a scammer before, but I was basically new to that back then and I made a few mistakes along the way. |

What you do next really depends on whether you want to continue the bait or not. If you don't then just go silent on them and don't respond to any of their mails/calls, but don't confront them and tell them you know it is a scam - they'll realise you've been wasting their time and will know what to look out for next time, which makes them better scammers.
If you want to continue the bait, then come up with a reason why you failed to make the meeting (hit by a truck on the way to the airport and only just got out of hospital, or something like that). |

Unfortunately--I can't really recover the bait. They looked up my phone number and saw it was proxied and also realized that the flight # I provided them with was fake. So if I replied, it would really only be for my personal curiosity as to what they're going to say or if they'll try to re-scam me and I can play with them again. I've heard stories of scammers giving sob stories to baiters in attempts to re-scam those baiters and get pity money.
So I'm really just wondering if there's some aspect to this that I'm not considering. For instance, I never really realized the implications of sending fake ID's until I read thru the Scambaiting University thing. Not sure if there's some argument against confronting them that I haven't thought about (or if I'm at risk of them trying to virus me or something). |

When I tell a lad I'll be arriving on a flight, I look up flight numbers and tell him the whole itinerary just as if I were doing it in real life. I arrange to change planes in a foreign country, then create a mishap at the plane change. |

I believe B8er explained it above. We don't "burn baits." While it might be satisfying to you, remove the need to show you're "smarter", because the risk it will make them a better scammer is high.
While it is unlikely a lad has it available, don't think there is not malware out there targeting the iOS operating system. |

Reply and tell them you have no idea what they mean by "proxied". It is the number you have used for years and that you got nervous about flying so you admittedly made up the flight number but now that you know they are serious you'd love to do whatever you can to claim your riches. Just keep bluffing and BSing.
As others have mentioned the key is to make them think that you were/are NOT baiting them. I have been engaged with a guy for a month that keeps insisting I am not being truthful about the "wine" that I have for "sale" but every time he smells money he gets back in the game and throws me another credit card number which I then report. |

You might be able to re-load and revive if you bring in another potential victim. Your current victim is upset and confused and can't handle the pressure any more and I'm a dear friend of his and is the money still there and how do I get it... |
