I quite enjoyed your Farmer modality and your ability to get the Lad off of script but you appear to have burned the Lad which is something we try not to do around here.
There is great satisfaction stringing a Scammer along for days, weeks, months and even years and when the Bait is finally over he is left scratching his head wondering just WTF went wrong.

yeah unfortunately I did this before knowing this forum, so I didn't know the line of work used, also it was my first time. So the suggestion is to just leave them with some silly excuse without "revealing" yourself? |

Regarding ending a bait - I usually "end" by simply stopping any replies (ideally before the scammer fully realises I am wasting his time), no silly excuse required. This way he never knows what happened and I have the option to come back later and bait him some more. |
