Craigslist and Amazon Payments Scam

Has anyone ever encountered a Craigslist scam that involves payment through Amazon payments? I responded to a Craigslist ad and the scammer sent me information about an invoice through Amazon Payments. They wanted me to send them Amazon gift cards to pay for the car. Does anyone have any information or experience with this scam? Please help!

Happens quite a bit to the degree of scammers falsely trying to sell a vehicle and get payment through digital systems that are hard to track. I thought Craigslist was supposed to be local buying and selling anyway so why not go take a look at the merchandise before throwing money down?

There have been a number of different cases where scammers ask their victim to pay using amazon gift cards -- this is not just true of craigslist sellers but is more widespread: such gift cards are effectively an untraceable and anonymous form of payment. The "Amazon Payments" invoice (faked) is typically used to make this mode of payment seem more official.
