My friendly local computer repairer has told me not to use anti virus AVG, as I seem to be having problems with it, have decider to have a new computer.

Can anybody recommend a better anti- virus that AVG?

I use malwarebytes and windows defender together, which seems to be pretty good at catching just about everything. No problems since using that combo.

The free version of Avast backed up with regular scans with Malwarebytes.

^^^ ...and Superantispyware. I find it gets more bugs than Malwarebytes including adware cookies if you want them removed.

The PCPro review of free anti-virus software recently had Avast free as the least intrusive (AVG scores badly here for continuous up-selling), best detection rate (noticeably higher than AVG) and low false positives.
Avast is the one I recommend to people who want free AV but I use Kaspersky paid for AV as it regularly tops tests for detection rates. Free AV is good but the difference in usability between them and Kaspersky I find significant. With the ransomware and prevalence of innocuous looking email / facebook viruses and scamware I would give serious consideration to spending the cash on an AV product.

I use the paid-for version of Avast and the free version of Malwarebytes and it's worked very well.

Been using the free Avast for at least 20 years and have never had a problem

I use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes as well. My computer has never had any problems since I started using them.

Ive been using AVG for years, along with Malwarebytes, never paid for anything and only one nasty attack (ransomware) , sorted after advice from here.

I note the person who told you it was rubbish also has an interest in selling you something.

AVG blocked a trojan attached to a jpg I downloaded this morning, and dealt with it, no fuss.

I used to use AVG and was happy with it but after one of the Ogglettes caught a nasty ransomeware on their machine I found Malwarebytes very usefull. It has a free version but for various reason I have forked out for paid version and so far so good ( and I was able to use it on several machines so daft Ogglette has greater protection on the sites they surf)

Mr Ogg uses Avast

I also use Spybot

In the past I had problems with windows updates clashing with AVG

Avast user here as well!

Reliable, has tool that gets rid of browsers garbage as well and blocks harmful files trying to get into your computer on the fly.

^ This + if you must go paid maybe consider Trend Micro. They have been up in the top 3 with Kaspersky for years now on AV detection rates.

Your safest browser will be chrome with firefox as a close second. Consider using something like the NoScript add on for either browser when you're investigating some potentially spooky things and use an add on for no ad's as a lot of malware is served through ads these days.

If you are really spooked about what you are investigating, consider purchasing or using an AV with a sandbox or even using a sandbox like sandboxie.

^^ seconded, sandboxie is a damned fine addition to the family's arsenal, the free version or the paid if you want more utility. Been using it and Malwarebytes for some years but as per comments above I think I'll check out SUPERAntiSpyware as an extra.
