So I go ahead and make it clear I know he is a scammer, without telling him why. It may seem odd, but it's not uncommon for prior victims who think they might be in contact with a new scammer to respond this way (even including links to listings on anti-scam forums.) If the scammer has a big enough ego, he will believe he can talk his way out of it.

Well I am certainly looking for someone honest myself, but somehow I don't think I'll find it in you.
