Thiis is my first post here, but since this is something I have never run across , I figured I'd consult with the experts before proceeding.
This is a roomate scam. I found out about it from a (not very bright) friend that posted a room for rent on craigslist. Basically someone claiming to be a girl named Sookie Arrington who was born in Nevada, grew up in France and now living in Guam is looking for a room to rent while finishing their masters degree. They sent him a stock photo as their picture and fed him a bunch of b.s. about shipping a $2800 money order, taking some out for rent and shipping some back to her for travel expenses.
Clearly, I smelled a rat and told him what was up before he could cash the fake money order. Just out of curiosity I figured i'd text the same number with "hey this is Cole with the room for rent" and sure enough, got fed the same story almost word for word. The person is speaking in broken english, and this is quite literally so bad its funny.
What i want is help with some ideas... I am formulating a general plan, but i'd like to hear some ideas, anyone experiences dealing with a similar situation etc... I'll even provide you guys with the phone number (if you PM and ask) so you can start your own scambait. |

Also should mention I'm fairly experienced with scam baiting... I know enough to really give a person a good go. The phone im using is a pre-paid phone, so no danger of it being traced or whatever. I do scam-bait in my spare time... thats why when I saw a dear friend of mine almost fall victim to this B.S. i knew I had to step in... this one is personal. |

Yeh I know the feeling of baits being personal. I feel the same when I see scams originating from my country.
Regarding this situation, I can't think of any specifics. The thing about most scams is that whatever BS they come wrapped in, it's still the same principle underneath: they want you to send them money and/or act as their mule.
So I guess in this situation, you have plenty of ammo to keep them busy. All kinds of questions spring to mind: Is he/she a smoker? Do they mind that you are? Does he/she need the room furnished? Did they consider utility bills when calculating the cheque amount?
And then of course we move on to the standard payment delaying tactics
Have fun, I might PM you and ask to join the baiting BTW

Just a reminder, if the scammer has any REAL information about your friend, get out and "reply" from an anonymous account to get the lad to reload and start the scam over.
Bait safe! |

Yea, this guy definitely doesn't have any of our real info. The only reason i put it up on here is because it being personal enraged me, I didn't want to become clouded by emotion and make a mistake. Also, I was hoping someone had a grand-slam idea they were waiting to use (i.e. having every gay porno mag on earth being mailed to said persons name, but surrounding addresses with "bill me later" checked. |

^^I don't think that's such a good idea. It wouldn't be very effective, and it's not fair to the publishers of such, um, literature.
Rental scammers can be tricky. Because they're usually in it for a relatively small amount of money and a quick score, they can twig easily when things don't flow smoothly. That said, they're greedy criminals and just like with a lot of other types of baits, getting them off script and into your storyline is key.
If you're an experienced baiter, I'm sure you're aware of lots of ways to jump script, but it can be challenging to target a specific scammer. An approach like: "I know you're a scammer, but I don't care. You're just the sort of person I need to help me with..." can be a good opener if you're trolling for candidates for ambitious baits, but whether or not this one guy will go for something like that is a long shot. |

Ditto on the "I know who you are and let's get rich together" strategy. I've had a great time not only re-starting baits that have wound down, but also reducing the lads to ranting, quivering heaps of pain.
And they rarely figure out they were baited at all. They just figured they got ripped off by another scammer! |
