I know this topic is covered well elsewhere, but I wanted to find out how many of you experienced baiters bother to hide your IP addresses. I have the TORR project software on my computer and use it when I'm at home, but anywhere else I can't. And it's a bit of a pain considering how slow it is. I'm mainly wondering if hiding IPs is commonly done or should I not bother. Thanks as always.

Don't be too worried where the IP Address can tell you where in the world you are it does not point to your actual address

It can put you in the general area, but I doubt you would be found, having said that it is still better to bait as safetly as you can

As Vamp said I hide when I can but I am not too bothered if once in a while it leaks out. Even if a lad got hold of your IP address it would take a considerably large amount of bribes to illegally obtain the kind of information that could only legally obtained by a court order. You would have to seriously ruin one of them enough to go to those lengths.

One baiter on these forums once under the location in their profile put his IP address down to make the point that disclosing an IP wasn't going to lead you to their house.

Hodor, when you say "hide" it, do you mean in e-mail correspondence? I just use fastmail, myopera or gmail, which automatically strips my IP address. I also *don't* open any images when asked in case the lad is using an e-mail receipt checker.

Gmail does deliver IP adresses in the header. I have looked up several from lads. Maybe it's a recent change?

Gmail puts the IP address in the header if accessed with SMTP. If accessed with HTTPS, it doesn't, as of five days ago (checking an email from Saleh).

Can you install Tor on a laptop and use it for baiting? That's what I do.

Just to clarify, if you send a message with Gmail using the browser interface, the IP will point to resolve to Google's servers. Using a client (eg Thunderbird) to access Gmail will expose your IP to recipients.

Yes, sorry Hodor if I wasn't being clear. The email providers I mentioned before will use their own IP addresses. As mentioned, this is dependent on browsers being used rather than email clients.

I used to have a static IP, and then I was a bit more concerned, as I also used that static IP for hosting a few web sites. If a scammer knew my IP, and had some way of finding any web sites which were hosted on that IP, then it could have got a bit closer than I wanted.

But most people, including myself now, have a dynamic IP. With a dynamic IP I would not worry one bit. I happen to use BT as an internet service provider in the UK, along with several million other people, so realistically I don't see it as an issue now.

Everyone has different levels of risk for different things. I don't mind working with voltages of 5 kV as a hobby, but don't like climbing ladders. Others would climb up ladders all day, but would be frightened of 230 V mains voltages. For me personally, I think the risk of a scammer being able to do anything with my IP address is VERY remote. There's probably more chance of me being stuck by lightening in the next 5 seconds.

PS, I seem to have survived for more than 5 seconds since I wrote that above!

I just use gmail for baiting and noticed that my IP location is never shown closer to 20+ miles from where I actually am.

A lad has got more chance of shoving butter up the ar@e of a porcupine using a red hot needle than pinpointing your location.

I can ad little to the conversation, except, the NSA is scanning the tor servers looking for enough data to justify the large amount of money they spend every day..

That other one too, oh yes, torrent.. but that's for downloaded movies or something.. not applicable to baiting I suspect..

If I were the NSA, I would create my own tor server.. But that's too easy.. right?
