I loved his books The Wasp Factory, Complicity, Whit, The Crow Road, but I could never get a grasp on his SF stuff.

The Algebraist defeated me but I was never good at maths.

The Crow Road opens with one of the best ever sentences "It was the day my grandmother exploded"
The Wasp Factory was gruesome but compelling

I couldn't get away with his Sci-Fi either.
I enjoyed his other books though.
He made me squirm and laugh at the same time.

I'm one of the oddballs who liked both sides of his work. The Culture stuff (along with work by Charlie Stross) got me back interested in sf after a period of serious disillusionment.
