The US authorities have used similar tactics to get fugitives, though they are usually just a tad more subtle--mailed to addresses they suspected were connected to the fugitives.
I remember (many years ago) they picked up a very large number of fugitives at once when they mass-mailed offers for free superbowl tickets--all they had to do was show up at a venue to get them. |

Too funny! Where I live right now they REALLY have a month where you can get a "discount" if you come turn yourself in. So you have to pay/serve less if you just come in that month. |

I have seen a few variations on this. They have had the free TV survey, the superbowl one, the autograph night and the sweepstakes one they named DEWERCS |

I too remember seeing that reported in our news over here. They all met in what looked like a giant sports hall. You've never seen such a collection of ne'er do wells, footpads and perpy looking perps in all your life.
It must have been a seminal moment when officer O'Malley of the state police introduced himself, and informed them they were all under arrest.
Bit like a Moonie wedding but the brides were a no show. |
