I'm new here but also a veteran web developer and I wonder how you guys are able to keep track of scammers, emails, cell numbers, baits and baiters etc. The Scam Tracker is a cool tool and I propose going a lot farther that direction.

Would it be useful to have a tool where you could, say, search by scammer name and it would pull up all relevant info on him. Like other aliases, IP addresses etc. Or search by cafe. There must be many additional fields you guys would know.

This would allow complex baits by attribute, for example for everybody who has mailed from a certain IP address, or uses a specific WU location, yada yada. Or if somebody else is baiting the same guy now.

I get the feeling that a lot of the effort you guys put in is not reusable, and you are re-inventing the wheel every time. Maybe later on, a decision-tree 'Wizard' tool could come out of the DB with templates of successful baits.

The data would come from Eater members. I bet some folks here have stuff in Excel you could contribute anonymously...?

I'd be surprised if you guys are not doing this already but I wanted to propose it anyhow.

Tracking by IP address is pretty patchy if you're trying for geographic location. Satellite providers don't give much away, and many lads seem to use mobile devices like Blackberrys, emails from which all seem to resolve to RIM's headquarters. Their phone numbers will give you a country code at least. You can get more information out of a lad by careful questioning, accumulation of evidence, and if need be impersonate another lad and just ask him where he is and what he does. It sounds like what PD (nice Mini pic, by the way) is suggesting is developing an NCIC database on scammers. (NCIC is the national criminal investigation database used by all law enforcement across the US.) It would be very complicated to do, but cool.

It's a cool thought. But the problem is getting solid information on who the scammers really are. This is a rare treat, since mostly they make contact purely by disposable email, and then under assumed names. Names are recycled with a few "usual suspects" like mariam Abacha and Charles Soludo, and lads may either play all roles in one scam or share roles (or single email addresses) with other gang members. I also think there may be little point tracking them as it is nearly impossible to get them arrested for scamming. There may be a lot of "yep. He's still there".

Be careful not to work harder than your lads (at least in the long term ... if you can strand your lad in Sudan with his sources of credit burned out then a few hours of writing and a few pounds on Skype calls will be well worth it).

There are many good uses for your skills - Check out some of the tools in the "help" section and you will get the idea of what we find useful. If it can mislead, misinform or otherwise help a lad to see a new and more tempting reality, it is a valuable weapon.

is it possible to use that aswell inside a database? (how about fingerprint matching and so on)
