I hope you are all safe that are in harm's way.

I was shocked to see the road and rail tunnels are flooded, just be thankful they had been closed as a precaution. The roadway tunnels will pump out OK, but knowing something about rail transport, the damage to electric railway systems and signaling must be mind boggling.

Keep everyone safe over there in the way of the old girl. Some wind and spatterings of rain & snow up here in the mitten.

I wonder how long before we see Hurricane Sandy scams. I thought I had one already but it turned out to be the Michigan Republican Committee mobilizing to try and help victims. (I checked the E-addy through Dormain Dossier)

Thankfully took a last minute turn and missed the Baltimore area.Some power out and trees down around here,but does not look like we did badly around here.

Polar opposites. Strange to see how a bit of wind can hit so hard when the Northern US can deal with snowstorms as if they're nothing.

Here in the UK, 70-80mph winds and flooding hit us at least half a dozen times a year and it doesn't really make much impact. People just carry on as if nothing's happening.
Yet one flake of snow and everything is devastated and the whole country comes to a standstill.

a lot of the problem was the direction of the wind. The wind blowing in off the ocean made the tidal surge devestating because it blew tons of extra water in to land. Especially bad was Long Island Sound, because the wind blew a lot of the Atlantic Ocean in between Long Island and CT causing massive flooding and tides 11 feet higher than normal! (the full moon was also partly responsible). Apparently, Sandy has claimed 16 lives so far that they know for sure!

Here in CT, the shoreline is devestated. A lot of people are without power, but by some mirace, this is the first storm in ages where my power did not go out! I think New York City is going to be in shambles with that salt water getting into the subway tunnels. That is not going to be an easy fix.

People here were in a panic over this, and were clearing out the grocery stores over this. And we weren't even going to get hit that bad.

Yet--they can forecast a foot of snow, and it's "ho, hum."

It is rather funny that during the average Nor' Easter, you will see people out driving in their 4x4 vehicles here like it is nothing, but with this "hurricane," all of the highway's in CT were closed for almost 24 hours. It is much more dangerous to drive in a blizzard, but I guess it all amounts to what we are used to. We aren't used to dealing with high winds coming off the ocean (they come from the opposite way 95% of the time), but we are used to dealing with a lot of snow in the winter. Exact opposite in the UK. It was no where near as bad as they thought it might be in the interior of CT. I have seen some pretty bad pictures of the coastal flooding, though. It was only the fourth worse storm as far as power outages ever. (3 of the top 4 are from 2011 and 2012)

^also we in the UK need to remember, the remains of any storm on the east coast of the USA, ends up coming to us, my late mother use to say "The weather New York gets we get 6 weeks later", could be sooner.

Having worked on the London Underground, don't expect New Yorks subway to be able to safely work through the effected area, for some months, tunnels, track and manly all sorts of cables, either have to dry out or be replaced, where cables join is a major problem. The system has to be, completly tested, throughout.

^ that's going to be an enormous job and very difficult. We have regular outages in one of our industrial areas because of some substandard joints in the local MV network that let in water and explode periodically. It's a royal pest.

We had a pink/rose dawn Monday morning (12 hours before the storm hit). The weather folks said it was because we were between two storms.

Rain all day in Maine, windy but not disasterous. Still raining outside, a few thunderstorms thrown in too. Overall up here...boring!! Thumbs down

All in all up above the St. Lawrence it is windy and rainy but then again when isn't it? Oh yeah last summer when we had no rain, no wind and just a few million Hectares of forest fires to deal with. Then, of course, it did get windy!

Flew back from Louisiana to Buckeye Land today. It was breezy and rainy but everybody has power. Some snow came down, turned to slush, and disappeared. I got home to find I lost some lawn furniture to some 50 MPH gusts. A brother in southern Maryland got hit but reports everybody has power and minimal damage.

That was a bad storm. I don't live on the coast luckily, but even so, we got hammered. Fortunately, I only lost power for about 24 hours and no damage to the house, but had some water in basement and tons of limbs down. I did not sleep well watching my giant trees sway back and forth.

I have relatives who have a house on the South Jersey shore -- they are very worried, seeing pictures of the destroyed boardwalks and flooded towns. I will take a blizzard any day. Gives me an excuse to break out the snow blower. Wink

As Fo'andles posted above the subway / municipal infrastructure will take a while to get sorted out which means NY will be on a go slow for a few weeks. No doubt the flood water will have mingled with the sewage system as well for everybody's benefit.

Happens all too often in the lowland parts of the UK. Maybe both countries can come to another Lend / Lease agreement - We send you Tidal Barriers & Sandbags and the USA can send us Snowploughs Wink

I was up in the "mitten" (Michigan) when Sandy struck and since. Did not see any rain or snow there on the southeast part. My grandson who was home on leave in Michigan was able to fly out back to his base on Monday.

Apparently in NY where the power is out there are "wolf packs" of teens pillaging the drug store for "drugs" and other businesses for what they could get. I understand the movie stars who live in power-out areas like Trebecca, etc. left their dark apartments to go to hotels where there is power and hanging out at the bars.

Many of the charities and churches have trucks on standby waiting to be able to get into the devastated areas to start the re-build.

One of my former high school classmates who is a professor at a South New Jersey college has not been heard from since before the storm. We have been watching FB every day hoping to hear something.

Having gone through a number of major hurricanes, like Katrina and the recent one Issac, I fully understand what these people are going through and pray for a safe journey toward normalcy. We are always thankful when November 30th comes as that is the end of the current hurricane season and then start praying again the next June. I think the problem with a 'cane going up the Atlantic Seaboard is they are not always that prepared. We prepare all year long even when it is not 'cane season, laying in our supplies and replenishing because we try not to depend on FEMA.

Some of hubby's relatives are on LI. The whole neighborhood is being told they won't have power for at least a week. The utility poles all came down, but they run in the backyards between the houses. Because so many idiots built Mcmansions all up and down the street almost completely filling the lots, there is no way for heavy equipment to get back there. Mad

Many from our power company here in Va went to NY to help out, they were sent away because they were not union workers. Sad
