Bugger all wrong with the conventional Naval battle plan of the time, it's just that Nelson (and co) changed it & managed to get a result. Being an island nation Britain had a relatively small standing Army & would have found it hard to deal with a Napoleonic invasion. This was quite serious at the time.
Just a few years earlier the same thing happened in North America, the United States got their tax free Utopia, and the Brits managed to keep the best bit (Canada).
