The document to download is probably a virus or other malware. There's no link to a website in the mail. My guess is that there isn't really anything you can do except delete and go on but someone else might have other ideas.

Maybe there's something to kill if the E-mail address it came from tracks to a fake site somewhere.

Get a second opinion I guess.

Yeah, probably virus. I just think that OP was asking how do we deal with this kind of scams - like we don't bite beggars. So is it OK to bite those who do scams with phishing or viruses? If OP didn't mean this, well then it's my question.

If it is OK to bite, of course you could answer saying you couldn't download it for some reason, you did download it but it doesn't open etc and get started from there.

We don't bait spammers and beggars. I looked for the thread that says that but as usual, I can't find what I need when I need it. LOL.

You can report that phishing attempt to the bank, in this case Santander. Check their website for a reporting address. Below is from their website

Quote:
We will never send you an email asking you to enter or verify your Online Banking or personal details. If you receive an e-mail asking you to confirm your Online Banking log on, card or personal details, please do not reply as it will be fraudulent.

We would be grateful if you could forward any suspicious emails to [email protected]

We investigate every report, though are not be able to guarantee a response to each email received.

If you think you've responded to a scam email or given your details out to the wrong people, please call our Online Banking Helpdesk on 0845 600 4388 * (7am-11pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-9pm Sundays).

My credit union and other banks will tell you if you get something like that to report it to them.

Usually I delete these phishing attempts unless it is at a credit union or bank which I have an account.

I highly doubt it's a virus. It's usually a form asking for minor things, like your bank account number, routing number and PIN. Rolling Eyes

I suppose you could always send a lad's account information..."roasting the pig", so to speak.

I wonder if sending a lad account with a made up Pin number wouldn't go against the ITP rule. Many of the accounts they use belong to Mules rather than the Lads themselves.

Report to Santander as Morgan said. You may also report to the ISP that it looks like they are hacked and infected with a rogue virtual network client on their IP's port 3389:

http://www.binrand.com/post/2697079-work-vnc.html

In short someone has a trojan set up on a victim using the IP 75.26.152.88. I would not trust that attachment they sent you by any means.

I think the bank in question should know of this phishing attempt and should be reported to them just as we report .edu's to the appropriate educational facility so they make take action as as they deem appropriate.

I know my own credit union when they get these reports take them very seriously and post on their website where to report. Pay Pal does the same thing and can be reported to Pay Pal when something is spoofed or phished.

A little quote from another well learned baiter:

Quote:
Just to remind everyone here that it's not a good idea to open up any attachments or links a scammer sends you. Remember that scammers are often using computers in internet cafes that could have picked up anything. When we check the links or open anything, we do so either after running a virus check on it, or on a computer that uses Linux instead of Windows. Quite often both. The scammer may not even be aware he's sent you a nasty, or he may do it deliberately to try and get your login details by sending you a keylogger. Keep yourself safe, double check everything your scammer sent you.
