Among other details, 'headers' from an email show the originating IP address from an email sent to you and the true email address that has sent the email.

If you would like help as to how to view the header from an email you have received, post the type of email you are using here (yahoo, gmail, etc..) and myself or someone else can show you how to view the header.

Hi jeanie. Finding the IP depends on the type of email you received the mail on. Here is a guide to finding them.

http://www.ip-adress.com/faq/view_email_header/

If the mail is from Yahoo and you received it in your Gmail account. Use the Gmail guide. etc.

You then copy and paste the header to here: http://www.ip2location.com/emailtracer.aspx

Checking for the 'header' of an email is done through your email account. If YOU are using yahoo for your email, from the inbox or folder view, right click on any particular email you want, and select 'View Header'. Somewhere in that mess (towards the bottom) there will be a "Received: from [xx.xx.xxx.xxx]". This number is the IP address that shows the location of the sender.

You can plug this number in here: http://www.iptrackeronline.com/ and find the location of the sender.

*Note - gmail will strip the IP from the sender - so looking at a gmail email header won't give you the IP of its sender. This is also true for your baiting account. If you are using an email to bait with, such as Yahoo, the receiver of your email can see YOUR IP and see where your emails are coming from. If you are baiting this way, my advice to you would be bait safe and if you are concerned about scammers seeing where you are located, then sign up for a free gmail email to use and then they won't be able to.

As far as Western Union, there's a lot to be said. The quick version is: Scammers will usually ask for money (advanced fee fraud) to be delivered by Western Union or Money Gram (basically the same thing). This is a way for them to receive money virtually anonymously and continue to scam victims. There are countless ways to deal with a scammer asking you to use Western Union, which are better explained in numerous ways on 419eater.

If you don't have one, I would recommend signing up for a mentor, who can help you through all of this much better than I can:

Best of luck with 'em.

However if your lad is using Gmail, you may be able to find his location using an email tracking system such as http://www.spypig.com/ or http://whoreadme.com/

There are a few instances where that will not work, but 99% of the time it does -- and will show you the location, time they opened the mail, and how many times they opened that mail. It will also show in the opening count if you open the mail later.
