Just got back home a little bit ago. The entrance to the neighborhood was still flooded. I called the neighbor with a back hoe who got another neighbor in today (our neighbor who is a captain on an oil rig in Nigeria -- he just flew in this a.m. on his 30 day rotation back to the states).
In the meantime another neighbor with a 4-wheeler met us at the end of the road and we followed him through the flood waters with my pickup truck -- he could see the road and the edges of the road. I had to leave my car at the nearby little store.
Fortunately there was no damage to my home or property other than small limbs down and soggy yards.
While we aren't taking the chance of trying to get out; we have plenty of food, water, cable, internet and are dry. And the cats are happy, although they don't like getting their paws wet outside. But they went out anyway to investigate.
As an aside. My pepper plants outside thrived and I have a bumper crop of banana peppers and jalapeno peppers!
Waiting to hear how BRUIN has fared. |

^Glad you're safe and back home Morgain. That all sounds a MAJOR pain to deal with. Hope your land dries out okay.
Go easy with all those peppers, at least until you know the waste system is okay. |

^^ We have our own septic treatment plant on my property and it is functioning quite nicely.
Nice to be home and I have plenty of food that I have either canned or dried and vacuumed sealed. And power was only out for 30 mins so have loads of frozen food also.
And the cats are happy! |

If the cats are happy, then all is well with the world.

Seriously, I am glad you are home. I hope your property dries out soon. Any gators to contend with? |

Glad you're home OK.
Although I certainly am concerned about you folks in the Delta who had to ride out the hurricane, it is a blessing for us. The remnants of Isaac dropped more rain on us today than we got during the whole month of August. |

^^^I would expect nothing less. I did wonder about sssssnakes. I am sure the water displaces them too.
Do you shoot on sight or do you ask them to identify themselves and state their intentions? |

^^^ Yes, we have seen an increase of snakes around, but mainly in the flood waters. I have not seen any on my property as the waters that were there have abated.
Thus far none have been close enough to warrant execution. I thought if there were some in that category if they looked like Barrister Insane or Dr. Duffus or some others who have sent me their photo ID I would immediately shoot. And I am a pretty good shot. Out of 50 rounds shooting at a paper human form I put 48 of them in the torso body mass near the heart. So am also prepared for the 2 legged snake variety in case they come calling. |

This afternoon we got the 4-wheeler out and went through the neighborhood stopping to have a beer with other water logged neighbors on their porches. The water has receded a bit, however, it was still over my boots on the 4-wheeler. Patches of our streets still have about 10 inches of water on them but the 4-wheeler performed admirably getting through. There is still about 10 feet of water down at the River.
The people who live on their houseboats get out as far as they can in their regular boats and then get on their 4-wheelers to get out to drier land.
There was one reported generator stolen and the men and many of us women are wearing our small arms holstered when we are out and about on our 4-wheelers and boats. -- for snakes you know (In our state this is part of the Castle Doctrine in and around our houses/property and in our vehicles) |

Yesterday was the day for snakes -- black snakes and water moccasins. Several are now fertilizer in my flower gardens, including the water moccasin that got into the house which **I ** had to deal with. So I took a garden hoe and chopped him in the middle. Took him outside and whacked the bejabbers out of him into about 15 sections and the whacks were so hard that it also buried those pieces |

^ Meanie.
Are snakes normally a nuisance where you are, or is it just because of the floods that they're more prevalent? |

@Cougar Mostly the water moccasins don't come out onto our property, however, they sometimes do. They are more prevalent right now because of the flooding. Black snakes appeared occasionally.
Until recently I never had a snake come into the house. Just tree frogs and lizards (on there own). The cats also like to bring in the frogs, lizards -- and an occasional bird that has been injured -- my cats don't climb trees to get birds. I can usually spot the snakes when I am outside hanging out the clothes to dry as I keep the grassed mowed back quite short (easier to spot the slithery devils). However due to the previous 12 days of rain, then the 30 inches of rain that was dumped during the slow moving hurricane, the grass is about ankle deep and growing -- and we just got another 3 inches of rain last night.
Right now I have to be careful outside picking up limbs, and other debris that has floated on to my property. I wear leather gloves and boots -- can't wear sandals outside right now.
I am supposed to have a contractor come to build a patio roof/cover but he cannot get his trucks in with the materials until we are more dried out.
As an aside to the hurricane, my cats have been indoor/outdoor cats and never knew what a litter box was. Staying in a hotel, they had to learn to use it. Now the one cat, Morley, has decided this is luxury. He will come in from outside to use the litter box and then go back outside!!! I have fixed that. The littler box disappears during the day or I sit a big box over it.
@Jim I have enough side arms and long arms that we can protect you -- just need to find those silver bullets! |
