It's a beautiful thing to see a working dog do what it was bred to do, instead of destroying things out of frustration and Schutzhund is a fun sport for them.

It is also a test of how confident a dog is and how well he works in front of his handler. Tracking is not something that a dog can ask you to hold his hand during! The dog will be required to properly identify articles (by alerting in some fashion such as lying down on or near the object) to his handler that have been left on the track by the track layer.
Protection: This is the most misunderstood of the three phases of training and is normally the one the general public focuses on. During training and trialing, there must be a ‘helper’ to do protection work. A helper is the person that will be wearing the padded bite sleeve. This person will also be concealed behind a blind and at more than point during the test will either attempt to escape or pretend to threaten/attack the dog or handler. Initially the dog is required to locate the helper when he is hidden and hold him there for the handler. When the helper attempts to escape or threatens the dog or handler, the dog is to actively apprehend the helper by biting the bite sleeve. A dog must be confident enough and strong enough mentally to handle this work, but he must also be sensitive to handler commands and release the sleeve when requested. It is hard to call a dog off when he is working at a high, excited level (or in high drive mode) so it is imperative that he is trained well enough and is responsive to handler commands.

No, she chases small animals, kills them, but does not eat them

no problem, police dogs are something totally different, but unfortunately i have little to no experience with police dogs and can't really explain the differences.

Really not much difference with police dogs. They're trained to attack the same way and grab the gun arm. To them it's just a fun game and they must have rock-solid temperaments since they have to be very safe around the public e.g. finding lost children etc..

Nice dog. I do like the training angle you mention. It sounds like more of a military style discipline than that of police..... but a majority of police forces even use Schutzhund for their top qualities in the field. I grew up with a Schutzhund as a child. It was the nicest and most obedient dog you could ever meet.... far from an attack dog. It was the gentle giant you could trust around your children. If you were a stranger hopping over a fence while the children were playing though.......... Twisted Evil

I do have to ask Klaas how much did you pay for such a finely trained canine? I have been actively entertaining the thought of getting another German shepherd for a couple of years now should I ever be in a position to stay in one place for a while or take the dog traveling with me.

Well its really not military or police. Its mostly obedience and bitework is just a small part of it.

I pay about 15 euro a month membership fee to my local club. This for 2 training days a week. I think the total cost of a dog for me is between 1000 and 1500 euro a year. This includes food, vaccination (parvo, rabies etc) toys , leashes etc

Beautiful dog, Klaasvaak. Sure wouldn't want to come into contact with him in a dark alley somewhere. Much as I love dogs, I know I would be missing a few parts if I did meet him in a dark alley.

My father did this kind of work, with what we called German Shepherds. "King" was my favorite. I was very small, and tried to ride him like a pony. He always put up with me. When Dad and his team would train him, I'd have to be in the house, because King would always get between the trainers to protect me. One time he 'ooffed' me to the ground and laid on me, growling until I was safe. I kicked a bit, grabbed him by the ears, and said, "Get off me, King, I am fine!"

I was too young to understand that he was a dog to be afraid of.
