I've been baiting a lad passing himself off as a Dr Bernard Pramana. He pretended to be stranded in London having had all his money taken by Customs at the airport. He wanted $3,000 from me via Western Union (there's a shock!) His IP put him in Lagos so I strung him along for about a week and a half until he sent me this...

Not sure who the major is that he thinks he's going to tell, but the point is I suspect he must have Googled my Jimlad character name although I've just tried it and it doesn't come up at the top of the results list. Anyone any other ideas about how he might have rumbled me?

Is that the only character you have Jim? Add a few of both gender and maybe even a twisted one and start on him again. Having several mails will let you play with them a bit more.

It sucks to be rumbled but it's not that bad. I did start masking and keeping certain parts away from Giggle because of being rumbled a few times.

It seems to me that too much info here is available without logging in. Using robots.txt to prevent Google from indexing might be a good idea.

I've eight or nine different baiting personas, but if I post the results of a bait it's always under my Jimlad username. Is that the problem?

PS I can't wait to find an excuse to use my latest character. His name was my wife's idea. A Chinese gentleman by the name of Fu Tlongpoo!

It's much more likely that he googled his own address, like CP suggested. They tend to do that sometimes. Your character's name, Jimlad shows Eater as the first site when googled.

Pick up another character and re-bait.

If you're worried that the lad picks up the bait, keep everything behind a login until it's concluded.

Keep posting their formats at scamwarners, though. Just keep your own character's name far away, so you can always deny. Hopefully he'll blame an actual victim for posting at SW, and drop the person.

Thanks for that Probie. I'm not sure I could bait him again without him noticing the similarities in it. His tale is pretty bare and I don't have the imagination to squeeze any more out of this one.

Robots.txt is a file that is placed on the server to request web crawlers ignore certain content.

jim, also spreading out any email addresses so they reads something like your name(at) gmail. com and then use the mask feature around that to completely hide it should suit your needs.

Or deny, it is the Internet scammer that took your ID with his fake talk about money, you send him over $2,000.00 and a copy of your passport and now he is pretending to be you, got a credit card in your name, he takes the money and you have to pay the bill. It is a good idea when posting to remember which threads are behind logins. Main is not behind a login. I don't think Publish Your Bait is behind a login, thus googleable. It is a good idea to know which threads are behind logins.

Risquee believes that maybe all our threads should be behind logins; however I think the Admin and MODS have reasoning for that to not be the case.

Even when posting in HH&T it might be an idea to put an "x" in a name or to change the name, i.e. your name might be Jim.Lad or JimLxd. Or change the lad's name if it is Peter, make it Pete or Mark, etc.

I decided not to post anything on active baits (or characters). Once they retire or die off it shouldn't matter.

A Romance lad of mine found himself on ScamWarners. Yep, I'd put him there, and he knew that it was my character who was involved, because some of the emails he sent to only her.

She blamed, not Gomer in this case, but a jealous ex-lover who knew the password to her email account. But was the jealous ex-lover correct? Was he a scammer? She came up with an idea. No scammer would ever show their real selves in photographs, right? No scammer would prove it was himself by writing personal messages on a picture of her favourite Norse god, surely?

I have also, on good authority, been told to use the "Mask" feature sparingly as it eats up server space. I have good luck simply changing one letter (removing or other wise) to obscure as needed.

Also, I maintain no connection between characters and the name Badgerbait. Deniable plausibility (or is it plausible deniability?) will usually work fine with a lad.

One last bit of advice, publish after the bait is finished. Then re-bait with a different character.
