So I love all things American except one thing that is important to me. Beer! Excluding a few exceptions most American beer sucks to me. So I'm curious if I'm missing out on a foreign beer.
For a point of refferances this is probably my favorite.
Do Belgium's really drink this or is it just something they export to the US?
What should I try? I'll try anything once (well almost anything so settle down PF I've already told you I'm not interested).
Btw the pic above accompanied these beauties tonight.
Edit: I also like dry cider like Strongbow but none of the other ones I have tried. If anyone has similar recommendations I'm all ears. |

When I'm overseas I try to sample the local beer. As for US beers, I'm a fan of certain microbrews. But I agree that for the most part the US beers are like making love in a canoe. |

Leffe is good, we drink it sometimes. You should try Guinness draught in cans, that's the same stuff that comes from the handpump in UK pubs. |

...fucking close to water. I've heard the canoe reference too, from a Canadian. It does hit close to home. I generally think that many American taste a bit waterish, but that is not always a bad thing in my book. I like to have a cool Corona (not American, I know) with a lemon when it is hot. And in every country there are the the microbreweries and many of those have excellent beers. And there of course the mainstream cheap shit like Budweiser and Miller's. And they are often quite drinkable even though they taste a lot like water at times.
In Sweden we have some mainstream things like Norrlands Guld and Åbro. And they are absolutely undrinkable. Tastes horrendous. And yet we also have micro breweries like Opprgård and Wisby that are alright and not seldom even very good. But in general Swedish beer such, especially compared to UK, Belgian or Czech beers, even Danish even though it hurts to say so.
I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Newcastle Brown Ale. But my personal taste is all over the map. Some of my favorites are Corona (lager), Weihenstephaner (weissbier), Newcastle Brown Ale (ale dooh) and Guinness (stout).
Never tried Dos Equis though. |

There's only one true beer.
Seconding the Corona and Erdinger.
Also, Guinness. Any time, any place.
Plus Guinness. Because it must be mentioned twice.
Duvel and Stella Artois ("Stella") are also good choices. Unlike chocolate, the Belgians really know how to make good beer.
If you're in the mood for something stronger, see if you can find a German beer called Ritterbock (knight's bock beer) - hard to get but totally worth it if you can handle the 9% ABV. On the label it promises that it will "oil your armour", and by golly, that's what it does! |

I'm not sure if you can get British [English] Real Ale in the US, but I can recommend the following:
Adnams Broadside 4.7%
Shepherd Neame Spitfire 4.2%
... " ............ ".. Bishop's Finger 5.0%
Greene King Abbot Ale 5.0%
One or more bottles of these luvverly brews will often be found lurking in my fridge. |

^^^^ Guinness is my absolute favorite. My favorite pub would pull the draft to fill the stein part way, wait a bit then finish up and as she was finishing would make a shamrock in the suds. I put a recipe in the Eater recipe thread using Guinness in a Chocolate Cake.
When I was working in an area of the medical field, we suggested new mothers drink European dark beers as there is more Vitamin B (relaxation) in those beers.
Our fridge has Guinness, Newcastle Brown Ale and various beers from local microbreweries.
After I started making my own beer (which usually was between 5 -7%) American beer is crap.
At a Canadian Forces Officers Club we used to be able to get something called (I think) Whatley's Black Label beer. Good stuff. |

Strongbow isn't a cider. It's piss in a can.
And it doesn't mix well with Baileys.
You need to get hold of some scrumpy. It's proper cider. Crap like Strongbow, Blackthorn, etc is as far away from real cider as Pastor Frank is to having a brain (or personality).
Real Scrumpy is cloudy and should be drunk at room temperature btw.
Google for cider farms in your area. I'm pretty sure that there are some over there. |

Man why didnt I ask this question sooner? I mean where else can you get such an audience of drinkers in one place.
I'm off to a specialty beer store we have to see what I can find. Some of these I've tried but are harder to find. I tend to like ale more than lager but not all lager is bad just not my favorite.
Quote: |

In my opinion it's better than Corona if your looking for a Mexican beer. The lager is pretty good but they also make an amber which is even better. You don't add a lime when drinking the amber.

I don't think we have the same thing you are referring to. We have "hard cider" which is very sweet not my liking. I did find an American Scrumpy brewed in Michigan. Thats a little ways away from me. I'll see what I can find at the specialty store. I do like unfiltered wheat beers so I'd probably like Scrumpy too as opposed to the piss I've been drinking apparently.
In Texas you can get stronger beers no regulation on alcohol content. Our close by neighbors to the north are restricted to 3.2 beer which is just beer flavored water. |

Boulder Stout was my favorite, and I am saddened by the news that they discontinued this. I've been drinking Left Hand Milk Stout lately, their Blackjack Porter is really good too. Arrogant Bastard Ale is good.
And for mainstream, I like Sam Adams. |

If i'm going down the pub with friends for a few bevvy's my pint of choice is usually Stella Artois.
For home drinking, i will usually drink whatever is on special offer at the local stores.
I have to agree with Llamedos' choice of British Ales, but would also recommend the following.
Tanglefoot
Hobgoblin
Old Peculier
I will occasionally drink Guinness, but find it a bit heavy and filling.
This is a superb alternative Youngs Double Chocolate Stout - Stout brewed with chocolate.
Unfortunately i have not been able to find anywhere selling it since moving away from London.
As far as Belgium beers go, this is one of my favourites
Duvel
Currently in my fridge, are a few cans of Stella, along with 6 bottles of
Fraoch Heather Ale and 6 bottles of
Bitter and Twisted which was voted Worlds Best Ale in 2007.

Definitely agree with budweiser tasting like water, it's fairly common in Ireland though. Sometimes I will drink it, especially if it's on offer in an off license. My favourites would be budvar, amstel and stella artois. In cider, I like Bulmers, otherwise know as Magners outside of Ireland. |

I'm not a beer or lager drinker but do like cider (although not cloudy scrumpy as it tends to go through me).
Getting the cruddy stuff out of the way, Strongbow is 'orrible and then there is Magners. Why the ffffffairycakes is this stuff sooooo popular? It has an unnatural colour and tastes like it has come out of the wrong end of a cow.
Now the good stuff. I like Stowford Press (when I can find it which is usually in Wetherspoon pubs) and Thatcher's Gold.
Thatcher's Katy and Cox ciders are very nice too and so is Aspalls as well. |

Was drinking Tribute Ale and Cornish Rattler cider in Cornwall last week, great stuff. Went to a Cyder farm and bought a couple of bottles of Scrumpy, which didn't last long though. As had been said, Strongbow/Magners is basically fizzy apple juice, avoid.
If you like dark beers and are prepared to drink slowly then Chimay Blue is a must - it's quite sweet and 9% bv which is why it lends itself to being drunk more like wine than beer.
Fullers honeydew is my absolute favourite beer. |
